There are few more exciting days for cinema fans than the yearly Academy Award nominations. This year was one filled with thrilling tales, slow-burn dramas, and plenty of comic book adaptations. But what is going to win at the most prestigious awards ceremony there is? The 2022 Oscar nominations are here, and they’re filled with snubs, surprises, and movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Tick Tick Boom. So, let’s dig into them.

Oscar Nominations 2022 – What Made the Best Picture Cut?

A lot of the speculation surrounding the 2022 Oscar nominations involved eager fans hoping to see films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Tick Tick Boom on the list for the most competitive award. Unfortunately, neither of them made the cut. But the ten films that did are still fan-favorites and include a few surprises. The Best Picture nominations are:

  • Belfast
  • Coda
  • Don’t Look Up
  • Drive My Car
  • Dune
  • King Richard
  • Licorice Pizza
  • Nightmare Alley
  • The Power of the Dog
  • West Side Story

Some of these are no surprise (The Power of the Dog, Dune) while others are immediately going on our must-watch list (Coda, Drive My Car.)

While many of us are disappointed to see Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick… Boom! left off the list, we’re pretty darn pleased that Andrew Garfield’s performance made it on the Best Actor in a Leading Role list for his portrayal of the iconic Jonathan Larson. He will compete against Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Will Smith (King Richard), and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth.)

Spider-Man: No Way Home was the talk of the town for Best Picture odds. Most of us knew that it was never going to happen, but considering how much money it made… Let’s just say that we weren’t ready to bet on it. In the end, the film only scored one Oscar nomination, and it was for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

Other Comic Book and Genre Wins in the Nominations

In addition to No Way Home‘s Visual Effects nod, the 2022 Oscar nominations have a decent amount of comic book adaptations and genre picks. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is sitting next to Spider-Man in the category, making Marvel happy.

Dune has ten nominations, including Best Picture, which is a win for sci-fi fans. Nightmare Alley‘s success also surprised us, scoring four nominations for Guillermo del Toro’s neo-noir.

We’re happy that genre films are getting some attention, but it’s no surprise that they aren’t found in more competitive categories. The Academy has always leaned towards specific types of films. And while they are becoming more diverse in who makes them (Jane Campion is officially the first woman to be nominated for Best Director twice!), it seems like superhero flicks have a long way to go before they’re considered cinema over entertainment.
