Neil Patrick Harris joins the cast of the fourth Matrix movie, as announced today by Variety. The actor is best known for his roles in Doogie Howser and How I Met Your Mother. Harris most recently appeared in A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix. He is only the second new actor to join the cast of the mysterious new Matrix revival.
We Have Very Little Info About The New Matrix Movie
In August, Warner Brothers confirmed news that a new Matrix movie was in the works. Lana Wachowski returns to the franchise that she and her sibling first brought to life in 1999. Wachowski will write the film with author David Mitchell, and she will also direct the movie. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss also plan to return, somehow reprising their roles from the original films.
Traditionally a comedic actor, Harris has definitely shown his dramatic acting (and singing) skills onstage in theatrical productions such as Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He has also played smaller dramatic roles in movies like Gone Girl. However, this is definitely an unexpected casting choice. As Neil Patrick Harris joins The Matrix cast, the question we ask is what kind of role will he be playing? Will he be playing to type as the comedic relief? Or will he play a rare dramatic character on screen? Sources indicate that his role will be a major one, but there is no information as to what that role will be.

Neil Patrick Harris Joins The Matrix Alongside Yahya Adbul-Mateen II
Actor Yahya Adbul-Mateen II is the only other new cast member that has joined the ensemble. He had a role in Aquaman, and will also appear in the upcoming Watchmen series on HBO. There is scant information on who Abdul-Mateen II may play as well. Some speculate that he may play a younger version of Morpheus.

If the series continues to in the cycle of eternal recurrence set up in the original trilogy, that might explain how deceased characters (like Neo and Trinity) will return to life. And perhaps Morpheus will be reborn as well, explaining the potential of a younger actor playing the role. This is all wild speculation however. Really, all of this is very mysterious. So far the only information we know about the new Matrix movie is that star Keanu Reeves thinks “it’s very ambitious.”
The new Matrix film still has no title or release date. Production is allegedly set to begin in 2020. As soon as we have more (read: literally any) information about this movie, we will dig into it here on Comic Years.
