A new time-traveling romance is coming from John Ridley, the Oscar-winning director of 12 Years a Slave. The film is called Needle in A Timestack. Some big names are onboard for the film including Orlando Bloom; Leslie Odom Jr., Freida Pinto, and Cynthia Erivo. The new film is also an adaptation of a Robert Silverberg short story. Silverberg is a highly prolific and Hugo award-winning sci-fi author whose stories have been adapted before into movies like Bicentennial Man. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from Needle In A Timestack and when we’ll be able to watch it.

The adaptation has been in the works since 2017, but went through a lengthy post-production. It follows a young couple whose lives are upended by a time-traveling ex who seeks to sabotage their relationship. An official synopsis for A Needle in A Timestack tells us the following:

“If love is in the form of a circle, what lines would you cross to be with your soulmate? In this gripping, near-future love story Nick and Janine (Leslie Odom, Jr. and Cynthia Erivo) live in marital bliss. Until Janine’s ex-husband (Orlando Bloom) warps time to try to tear them apart using Nick’s college girlfriend (Freida Pinto). As Nick’s memories and reality disappear, he must decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in order to hold onto — or let go of — everything he loves. Can love endure in a future where time is fluid, and all of life may be just an illusion?”

A Diverse Cast Fills Out The Roles

The promotional photos for Needle in a Timestack certainly show off the complicated love triangle. It is also refreshing to see so many actors of color playing the lead roles in the film. This is certainly a change of pace for the typically white male-dominated time travel subgenre. Director John Ridley has worked throughout much of his career to explore the lives and histories of black America. The film is based on the 1966 short story by Robert Silverberg. But Ridley appears to be approaching the adaptation with a fresh and modern take for the current day. And part of that includes a diverse cast of well-known actors.

Leslie Odom Jr. of course rose to fame for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in the original Broadway production of Hamilton. He also received acclaim for his role in One Night In Miami, and is slated to appear in the sequel to Knives Out. His love interest in the film – Cynthia Erivo –  is also an Oscar nominated actress who portrayed Harriet Tubman in the 2019 film Harriet.

Of course we know Orlando Bloom for his roles in The Lord of the Rings as Legolas, and Pirates of the Caribbean. Bloom most recently appeared in the Amazon Prime original fantasy series Carnival Row. Actress Freida Pinto rose to prominence as the breakout star of Slumdog Millionaire back in 2008. She last appeared in the films Love, Wedding, Repeat and Hillbilly Elegy.

Needle in a Timestack is set to hit theaters on October 19, 2021. It will also be released digitally and on Blu-Ray/DVD, although it is unclear if it will be available on any streaming networks. For more genre news and reviews, be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.
