Keaton will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, the same one that debuted back in 1989. He’s already putting on the cape for Ezra Miller’s The Flash movie, so the news that he’ll also appear in Batgirl is pretty exciting since it will create even more continuity between the different DC films. The Hollywood Reporter noted that Keaton’s Batman could become something akin to Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in the MCU: a mentor figure who appears in multiple projects. Fans got a first look at Keaton back in the Batsuit during October’s DC FanDome, the online convention dedicated to all things DC.
Keaton had seemed to distance himself from his role as Batman, telling The Hollywood Reporter “After the first Batman, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an entire movie. I just never got around to it. So you’re talking to a guy who wasn’t in the zeitgeist of that whole world.” However, when approached about reprising the role, he found himself drawn to it. In the same interview, he said:
“Frankly, in the back of my head, I always thought, ‘I bet I could go back and nail that motherf—er.’ And so, I thought, ‘Well, now that they’re asking me, let me see if I can pull that off.’ What’s really interesting is how much more I got (Batman) when I went back and did him. I get this on a whole other level now. I totally respect it. I respect what people are trying to make. I never looked at it like, ‘Oh, this is just a silly thing.’ It was not a silly thing when I did Batman. But it has become a giant thing, culturally. It’s iconic.”
Batgirl plotlines have been kept under wraps, but we do know it’ll focus on the Barbara Gordon version, who also happens to be the daughter of Commissioner Gordon (Simmons). Gordon is the most established version of the Batgirl character and was first introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane.
There’s no release date for Batgirl, but you can see Michael Keaton in the upcoming The Flash movie on November 4, 2022.
