Genre Veterans And British Comedians Join The Cast of Family Fantasy Film “Man & Witch”
The family-oriented fantasy film Man & Witch has acquired a number of big names and genre veterans recently. We first reported on the film last year when it was advertised as “peak 80’s fantasy nostalgia.” Since then it has picked up steam and added a number of cast members.

We already know that Tami Stronach (The Neverending Story) is onboard both as producer and star of the film. Joining her are some genre veterans like Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), and Shorhreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse). Now we have news that some well-known comedians are also joining the cast of Man & Witch. Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous), Eddie Izzard (Hannibal), and Bill Bailey (Hot Fuzz) have signed up for Man & Witch as well.

The film is being billed as an homage to the low-fi fantasy movies of the 1980’s. Which makes sense, seeing as how Tami Stronach starred in The Neverending Story as The Childlike Empress. She spoke about her long absence from the screen, and how she knew that it was time to make a new film in the same vein as her most beloved role.
“I’ve known for a while that it was time to come back to the screen. I was in New York making plays and dances, and I thought ‘eventually people will just forget about the Neverending Story and the fan mail will stop coming,’” said Stronach. “But the opposite happened. 80s kids grew up and now they want to share the things they love with their own kids. And there’s this huge appetite for those classic films, but also a desire to get back to what made those films so timeless. A sense of wonder, and magic and fun. A fantasy world that feels real. That we can lose ourselves in and return to over and over as a family.”
Man & Witch is a whimsical fantasy film for kids and adults alike. Much like the fantasy movies of the 1980’s, this film will feature puppets from the Jim Henson Creature Shop. Puppetry and practical effects in place of CGI has been making a bit of a comeback in recent years, with other 80’s nostalgia series like The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (to which Izzard also lent his voice).

The story for Man & Witch involves a goatherd (Greg Steinbruner) who falls in love with a mysterious witch (Tami Stronach). This family film is clearly a family project for the two leads. Steinbruner and Stronach are also married in real life, and the former is also the screenwriter for the film.
The puppets come into play with the goatherd’s collection of talking animals. Sean Astin will voice the Dog, while Jennifer Saunders, Eddie Izzard, and Bill Bailey will lend their voices to the goatherd’s loyal companions: Goose, Sheep and Donkey.
Man & Witch just wrapped a six-week shoot in Scotland and Los Angeles. It is currently being shopped around for distribution. We look forward to seeing this lighthearted nostalgic fantasy film coming to our screens sometime in the near future.

She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
