Andy Serkis crowned his career with the Lord of the Rings films playing the character of Gollum. Now, more than two decades later, the actor continues to reap success. Most recently, Serkis appeared in Disney+’s Andor series with his character Kino.

However, fans are clamoring for his return to J. R. R. Tolkien’s iconic character, and this comeback season is perfect for it to happen. The new move being mooted by Warner and New Line could bring Serkis’ character back. The major wants to develop a film in this franchise in the timeline when the character is still alive. This begs the question, will we see Andy Serkis playing Gollum again?

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Studios made a statement in mid-February about possibly developing a new film in this franchise. Fans immediately associated The Lord of the Rings with Andy Serkis for his excellent performance. The executives stressed that they want the plot to be set in the third age, the era in which the particular character Gollum appears. They even spoke with the director in charge of the first trilogy, Peter Jackson, and with the showrunners of these productions.

Serkis was asked about the possibility of playing Gollum if the studios approve his appearance in the film and if he would like to participate. The actor answered that he would like to participate, and although he has a preference for Gollum, he said that he can play other characters if necessary. In the interview, Andy commented the following:

“I adore those guys, and they are a second family to me. I’ve spent so many years making films with them. I love their sensibility and their take; it’s filmmaking on a different kind of level. You live and breathe it. And so, yes, if some opportunity were to come up, it would be an amazing thing.

A new Lord of the Rings production would gain a lot from introducing Andy Serkis. However, there is also the possibility of him playing a character other than Gollum. This possibility is on the table; in fact, Serkis is one of the actors with the best adaptability. For example, he played the leader of the dark side Snoke, Ben Solo’s Sith master. He also played the primate leader in Planet of the Apes.

Serkis’ work is quite well known at 59 years of age, winning Oscars for his portrayal of Gollum. In fact, critics note that his portrayal made the 3-D animated character seem like a real element in the film.

Warner Seeks New Stories to Bring to the Screen

Warner stated that it does not want to touch any of the stories developed in the Lord of the Rings films, such as the one involving Andy Serkis. Executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy commented that they are looking for new narratives and new facts, new emotions from J. R. R. R. Tolkien’s books. About this, they stated:

“Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realize the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen. The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans. But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honor, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure.”

For now, Warner’s move is just that, a strategy that has not yet been put into action. If they greenlight a new production of The Lord of the Rings, Andy Serkis will likely return to his character, or at least to the film with another interpretation.
