Lion King Prequel Casting: Aaron Pierre As Mufasa And Kelvin Harrison Jr. As Scar
Disney is no stranger to releasing live-action films of beloved animated Disney movies (they know the millennials who grew up with them aka ME will pay the money to see them). Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, and Mulan all got the live-action treatment, sometimes with mixed reviews. The 2019 remake of Lion King was one of these. While it had an all-star cast (Beyonce! Donald Glover! James Earl Jones!) and beautiful visuals, many said it was literally the same movie as the animated version just with CGI animals. Still, it grossed $1.6 billion at the global box office, so Walt Disney Studios was quick to lock down a prequel that will be directed by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). There’s no word on a release date yet, but the Lion King prequel casting is in full swing: Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) will voice Mufasa and Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Waves) will voice Scar, otherwise known by his birth name of Taka.

The as-of-yet unnamed prequel doesn’t have plot specifics yet, but it’s supposed to focus on the early years of Mufasa and his brother, which I’m actually really excited about. In the original animated movie, we only knew that there was a lot of bad blood between the two brothers, mainly from what I assumed to be jealousy. This prequel opens the door to so many possibilities: did Scar secretly love Sarabi? Did Mufasa push Scar into the watering hole and Scar never forgave him? We already know Jenkins is a talented director, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he does with the prequel. In an interview he said:
“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters. Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”
Now that Disney has its protagonists, we can only look forward to more casting news. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 movie, is returning to write the follow-up.
