Marvel Put Kang At The Center Of The MCU Thanks To Jonathan Majors Performance

As Marvel’s Phase V progressed, Kang the Conqueror became the plot’s central villain. Marvel currently considers the character played by Jonathan Majors as a successor to Thanos. However,the truth is that the plans did not have great expectations about this character, being the main antagonist, another entity.

New findings show that Majors’ performance was the main cause of the change of plans in the story to be told in phases V and VI. According to these, the actor’s performance surprised everyone, causing them to modify the structures of these stage productions.

Marvel Changed Phase V and VI Plot Because of Jonathan Majors’ Performance

In an interview on The Big Picture podcast, conducted by The Ringer, writer Joanna Robinson talked about her upcoming book titled MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios. There she revealed that the Marvel character Kang, played by Jonathan Majors, was not the focus of the plots of Phase V and VI. However, the actor’s performance changed the plans.

Robinson noted that Jonathan Majors’s performance in Marvel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was terrific. The reviews and praise from both audiences and movie pundits were such that it caused Marvel to change plans. She emphasized that according to a source that works there, the decision did not follow the company’s principles since they are not used to depending on a single person. On this, the writer commented:

“I was told by someone who works for Marvel, it was not the plan to make Kang the center of everything until they saw the dailies from ‘Quantumania’ and after his performance in ‘Loki,’ which was so strong they were like, ‘This is it. This is our way forward’… They don’t usually hang this much on one person in the way that they did here. And that has put them in the bind. We do not know what they are going to do. I’ve heard conflicting stories about they are going to replace him, they’re not even considering replacing him etc etc. But it’s just one more thing”.

This information changed Marvel’s initial plans for Phase V and VI, putting Jonathan Majors’ character as the biggest threat. Some of the villains featured that have high impact in this multiversal plot are Doctor Doom and Beyonder. In addition, Phase VI begins with the filming of The Fantastic Four, who was the first antagonist mentioned, gaining momentum.   

Disney Remains Silent on Majors Situation

Robinson commented on Marvel’s situation with Jonathan Majors’ legal problems. It should be noted that the actor is facing serious charges of assaulting a 30-year-old woman in New York. This caused many to turn their backs on him. However, the only one who has not decided what to do yet is the aforementioned comic book company.

The writer’s inside source stated no definite decision and contradictions among Marve’s internal comments. Some insiders assure that Marvel will take the character of Jonathan Majors out of the franchise, and others emphasize that he will continue with his role. At the moment, there is no reliable information, only confusion about the future of Kang’s interpreter.

Some hypotheses on this issue say that Marvel will fire Jonathan Majors and return to the initial plans in both plots. Others believe that the charge will not go further and that he will continue as the villain of the two phases discussed after the June hearing. A last one would imply that they will use another actor to portray the character, considering the appearance of multiple character versions at the end of the Ant-Man 3 movie.
