JK Simmons On Returning As Commissioner Gordon: “I Was Completely Flabbergasted”
When we found out that Leslie Grace was cast in HBO Max’s Batgirl, fans everywhere were excited! She was great in Lin Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights and she’ll be the first person of color to play the role of Barbara Gordon (whoo hoo diversity!). Later, HBO announced that Brendan Fraser would be cast as the antagonist to Grace’s Batgirl in the form of supervillain Firefly. The latest casting news? JK Simmons is returning as Commissioner Gordon, which is such a fantastic way to tie the DCEU together!

Simmons had previously played the police commissioner in 2017’s Justice League, although his role was quite minor compared to other characters. In an interview on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast, Simmons talked about being asked to come back to the DCEU as Commissioner Gordon:
“I was completely flabbergasted that they came back to me recently and wanted me to be Commissioner Gordon again, and have it be a more significant role…and I’m looking forward to it. I think I’m actually going to get on the horn with and the directors in the next couple days and do a little preliminary rehearsals…They start very soon, and then I jump onboard sometime in January over in Glasgow, which is a wonderful place to be shooting it because it’s, y’know, Gothic. I’m excited to be the once and future Jim Gordon.”
Simmons is no stranger to playing a part in superhero movies. He previously held the role of J. Jonah Jameson, the grouchy publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper that Tobey Mcguire’s Peter Parker worked for, and is set to return next month in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While we don’t know much about the plot of HBO Max’s Batgirl, Simmons told the podcast that he thought the script was an “interesting take” on the story of Barbara Gordon.

Given that Barbara Gordon takes up the role of crimefighter partly thanks to her father’s role in the police department, it makes sense that Commissioner Gordon is being played by someone as talented and dynamic as Simmons. The movie will be directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys for Life) with a script from Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) and Kristin Burr acting as producer.
Batgirl will premiere on HBO Max sometime next year.
