I’ve been a pretty vocal supporter of the Snyder Cut and the importance of Zack Snyder’s original vision seeing release. However, even I can’t seem to make much sense of the latest reports about Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Apparently, Jared Leto’s version of Joker from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad will be making an appearance in the Snyder Cut of Justice League. There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s dive right in.

From The Snyder Cut To The Ayer Cut

For context, we must go back to the original Suicide Squad, (not James Gunn’s new The Suicide Squad) where Leto portrayed a different kind of Joker. The movie introduced the world to Margot Robbie’s first-ever live-action Harley Quinn, in a toxic relationship with Joker. There was also a brief cameo by Ben Affleck’s Batman as the Joker escapes his clutches. Despite its commercial box office success and an Oscar win, Suicide Squad didn’t win over many critics. Rumblings later on revealed that the bi-polar nature of the movie resulted from a major shift in tone and style to better stay away from a ‘dark and gritty’ movie, something that Batman V. Superman took heavy criticism for.

Ayer stated on social media repeatedly that much of his vision ended up on the cutting room floor due to the studio’s desire for a change in style. Sounds familiar. The biggest of which, however, is apparently Jared Leto’s Joker performance. Ayer expressed many times that Joker’s involvement in the story took a backseat to the ensemble, even though there was a lot more Joker in the movie. Which brings us to how Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a little baffling.

It’s now a known fact that Zack Snyder left his vision for Justice League incomplete due to a family tragedy. When new director Joss Whedon’s revised version of the movie released, it left everyone divided. After years of controversy and a solid fan movement, Snyder’s original movie will release on HBO Max, with an additional $70 Million price tag. First, we got the confirmation, then news about how there will be an additional budget to complete the movie. Later on, we heard more about how the principal cast may return for additional reshoots. Although, since then THR confirmed that those reshoots are underway with Affleck, Ray Fisher and Amber Heard returning. We’re still unclear whether others like Gal Gadot or Ezra Miller will suit up for these new reshoots.

And now, a new THR exclusive says that Leto’s version of the Suicide Squad Joker will also be in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. And quite honestly, this is a little strange, for many reasons. Firstly, because it’s hard to imagine how Joker will fit into this story that already sees villains like of the intergalactic Steppenwolf, and the conqueror Darkseid himself. So how would the mad Clown Prince of Gotham even factor into this dynamic?

A Joker Cameo Is Possible But Still Strange

Now what may be more likely, is that Leto is doing a quick Joker cameo in Snyder’s Justice League, possibly as a button scene or with Batman himself. But given the treatment of his character in Suicide Squad, I find it hard to believe that the Morbius star would agree to revisit this character for a mere cameo in a 4-part mini-series on HBO Max. But that’s just speculation at this point.

Furthermore, Joker was, as far as we know, never part of the original Justice League. And until now, there didn’t seem to be any original plans for him to be included later, even if Snyder got a chance to complete work on that movie. So does Joker’s inclusion in this Snyder Cut imply that there may be more to the story that Snyder is adding on now, after his original plans? Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League definitely raises more questions than answers at this point.

Two Producers Getting No Credit For Zack Snyder’s Justice League

On top of news about Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the THR report also mentions a change behind the camera as well. Apparently, producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg are being left out of the credits for the Snyder Cut, despite them working on the original. Apparently, the studio is not crediting them, as they‘ve left the company, and had nothing to do with the Snyder Cut. The timing is definitely curious, given Ray Fisher’s continuous allegations about the Justice League set being unprofessional, and enabled by Johns and Berg. Whether or not this move had anything to do with those allegations is unclear, but some sources say it’s not connected.
