File this both under “Take with a Grain of Salt” and “We’ve Heard This Before,” but it seems Henry Cavill might be back as Superman as the actor is in talks with Warner Bros. Whether or not this rumor is true or credible, we’re covering it in the spirit of “manifestation,” because the Man of Steel Superman deserves another bite at the apple. Yet, as mentioned, this is not the first time we’ve heard that Henry Cavill is in talks to come back as Superman. Perhaps they never happened in the first place, or perhaps they did, and an accord could not be reached. Either way, the status of the DCEU Superman is up-in-the-air, and not in the way that we expect Superman to be. We’ll take a look at the rumor and explain why these talks are (at least) a good “guess” about what’s going on at DC Films.

Ever since Man of Steel, to understand what DC Films is doing, we have to look at Marvel Studios. Much has been made about the culture inside WB at the time of the DCEU’s heyday. Forces inside the studio supported director Zack Snyder’s vision, while others did not like it at all. Yet, with WarnerMedia and Discovery Media about to merge, it’s a whole new ballgame. And it’s all Spider-Man’s fault.

With Spider-Man: No Way Home setting box office records with three Spider-Men in it, legacy characters and the actors who’ve played them in the past are all looking at the roles with new eyes. It seems that audiences are fine with revisiting old versions of the character alongside the newest iterations. Seriously, who wouldn’t go see a No Way Home style movie with all the surviving Batman actors in it?

Why Warner Would Enter Talks to Bring Henry Cavill Back as Superman

Since the fiasco surrounding the two versions of Justice League, the status of the biggest DCEU stars has remained in flux. It took a long time for Ben Affleck to admit he’s done with Batman. We didn’t know if the rumored movie starring Ezra Miller as the Flash would ever enter production. Yet, Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa are both enjoying very successful franchises with their characters. (And we all know what’s going with Ray Fisher and DC Films.) So, that meant that Henry Cavill was the odd man out, especially with so many fans vocally hoping to see him back as Superman. The other reason? Because Cavill still really, really wants to play Superman.

He spoke about it recently (see video below), but Cavill first mentioned returning to the role during an off-the-books conversation with a fan at SDCC 2019. What he said then is basically what he’s saying now. He still wants to play the role, and it’s a personal desire for him. He also wants to bring his character’s arc to where it was always meant to go (if over a number of films): to being the Superman who is everyone’s friend. We didn’t hear much on this front until a report in the trades in May of 2020, with a familiar refrain: Warner Bros. and Henry Cavill were in conversation about a multi-appearance deal in other characters’ films.

Later, Cavill seemed to deny that these talks were even taking place. Whether they never happened or fell apart, by August 2021 it was confirmed that he wouldn’t be in The Flash nor was he under any contract. Warner Bros. then announced a new Superman movie with JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates featuring a Black actor cast in the Superman role.

Is This Warner Bros. Rumor a Credible One?

Since the DCEU currently has three Batmen (Keaton and Affleck in The Flash, and Robert Pattinson in The Batman), why couldn’t they have more than one Superman? Tyler Hoechlin and Brandon Routh proved this works in the Crisis On Infinite Earths event. So, it makes sense that with people eager to see him back as Superman, Henry Cavill would at least participate in talks with Warner Bros. Though, I suspect, that him being able to play a more iconic version of the Man of Steel is a key sticking point in those negotiations. At the very least, Cavill wants his Kal-El to complete his character’s journey to becoming the best superhero.

Alas, the source for this rumor is one of slightly dubious credibility. For example, they printed a “leak” for “Iron Lad” casting offered to us at Comic Years. We never printed it because it’s laughably unplausible. Still, whether this leak is authentic or just some keen guessing, I can see how it would make sense.

First, there is the Spider-Man: No Way Home of it all. Anyone who has access to a legacy franchise sat up and took notice at how excited fans were to see different versions of the same character united on screen. With Tyler Hoechlin, Brandon Routh, Tom Welling, and Henry Cavill, there are plenty of former Superman actors Warner could bring back as well. Second, Dwayne Johnson seems to be really, really eager to have Black Adam face off with Superman. And with his star power, DC Films and Warner Bros. would be foolish to not involve Cavill if the Rock wants him in his franchise. But would Cavill want to suit up again just for a punch-em-up (into a team-up) for Black Adam and Superman?

See Henry Cavill as Superman in all of the DCEU movies back on HBO Max.

What do you think? Do you think Henry Cavill should come back and play Superman, or do you think he’s not even in talks with Warner Bros.? Share your thoughts, reactions, and hopes for future Superman projects in the comments below. Also, speaking of rumors, check out our verdict on whether or not The Flash movie erases the DCEU.
