Godzilla Vs Kong Sequel Rumors – What New Monster Is Coming To The Monsterverse?

Godzilla vs Kong functionally saved the Monsterverse by being a perfect film. GvK knew exactly what it was, and it leaned into that hard. In one swoop, this film gave us some of the best Kaiju fights in years, pretty appealing monster lore, and big monke memes. Since it came out, we’ve been counting the days until we’d get a new Monsterverse movie and see our favorite big ape and spicy lizard again. We’ve been collecting Godzilla vs Kong sequel rumors, speculation, and just about anything we can find that hints what the inevitable sequel will be about. And we’re already seeing signs of a new monster Godzilla and Kong may have to fight. 

The New Monsterverse Movie

Godzilla vs Kong was supposed to be the big closer for the Monsterverse. It was planned as a spectacular end to the arc set up by King of Monsters and Kong: Skull Island. But then it was a huge success and basically reinvigorated the cinema industry. Seeing a pile of money the size of the fish mountain in Godzilla 1998, Warner Bros. planned a follow up. However, the plot of the GvK sequel is still up for debate.

We don’t know what it’s about, but it’s confirmed that the Godzilla vs Kong sequel is already filming in Australia. There are two main flavors to the rumors about the new Monsterverse movie. One camp says it’s going to be a reimagined take on Son of Kong, the critical and commercial failure following the original King Kong movie in 1933. The original plot of Son of Kong was disappointing. The crew return to Skull Island, find a large albino ape that’s a bit smaller than Kong. They call it Little Kong, bond, fight some monsters, and a combination of natural disasters results in the entirety of Skull Island sinking. Little Kong saves our undeserving heroes and goes under Terminator 2 style. Ideally, a new SoK movie would be a little more fleshed out, perhaps with an ending shot of Kong having a delightful hollow Earth picnic with his family.

The other theory about the new Monsterverse movie is that it’s going to be a direct follow-up to GvK. A Godzilla vs Kong sequel would be kind of incredible, but they’d have to be careful with it. We’ve already seen one begrudging Kaiju team up to fight a greater evil, another might make it a formula. Or it would take a very special monster.

A New Monster For Kong And Godzilla To Fight

Spacegodzilla’s story lines up with the major reveals from the rest of Godzilla’s half of the franchise. He was born when some of Godzilla’s cells ended up in space. Some versions had his cells fuse with a crystal entity or mutate in a black hole. What formed was a new malevolent monster like Godzilla but beefier with a palette swap and giant crystal pauldrons. He could also fly. Spacegodzilla has always had to be a team fight, so he’s the perfect enemy for the Godzilla vs Kong sequel.

If you look back at the Godzilla movies in the Monsterverse, it feels like they were setting up Spacegodzilla, even if they’re on the record saying GvK was supposed to be the end. In Godzilla (2014), we learn Godzilla has been around basically forever and has had a hand in keeping the Earth in balance. In King of Monsters, we learn King Ghidorah isn’t from Earth, and that’s also where we learn that Kaiju bodies have powers that can carry on and develop even after the monster itself is dead.

What Might Happen In The Godzilla vs Kong Sequel?

If they go with Spacegodzilla, then we might be getting a nice, contained end to Godzilla’s cyclical story. The Monsterverse established early on that Godzilla is an ancient force that emerges to duke it out and keep the balance. Then he sleeps. The first movie had him re-emerging. KoM was reclaiming the throne. GvK was a struggle against an equal. And this sequel might be something that sends our beloved lizard back to sleep, though not in his cool temple because someone went and blew that up.

That’s my prediction based on all the rumors around the Godzilla vs Kong sequel. Godzilla and Kong are going to fight against Spacegodzilla and ultimately win, but at a cost. We could see the other titans fleeing back to the hollow Earth and Godzilla following them down or sinking into the ocean to rest. That would leave room for the live-action Monsterverse series to breathe and grow and have real risk without there being this giant lizard Kaiju solution just beyond the horizon.
