Fornite is a cultural force, and so is Star Wars. So, it makes sense that in the rush to promote Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, that the game would get involved. On Saturday, J.J. Abrams appeared in a Fortnite Star Wars event that showed off a cool space battle, an exclusive clip of the new movie, and lightsabers. That’s right, in Fortnite (perhaps for only a limited time) you can use lightsabers as a melee weapon. There are also crashed TIE Fighters around the map that give you electro-batons and blaster rifles. The latter weapon is notable because it has unlimited ammo and takes a long time to overheat. Also, everyone at the event was gifted a hang glider that looks like Kylo Ren’s new TIE Fighter.

Streamers and folks in their chat all seemed relatively impressed by the Star Wars Fortnite event. Those who felt ambivalent about the ship battle or clip, all agreed that this marked a new chapter in Fortnite. If Fortnite is losing its edge, the developers and Epic Games likely hope these events will help Fortnite stay relevant. Also, this Star Wars Fortnite event could be the start of a brand new way to promote other media to gamers.

In the video below, you can see the full event, including the exclusive scene from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The event began with a large platform at the center of the map rising into the sky. Then, scored to classic Star Wars themes, the Millennium Falcon appeared in the sky. Immediately after a number of First Order Star Destroyers appeared as well. The Falcon and TIE Fighters fought it out for a while. Then, all the players were knocked off the observation platform so the Falcon could land there. Then three avatars exited the ship, including one of J.J. Abrams. After some goofing around, they showed the new clip. They had people “vote” for the clip, however the choices were mostly goofs. The options were Knights of Ren, Rey and Kylo Power Ballad, and Darth Jar Jar.

After the clip, the group voted on what their favorite lightsaber colors happened to be. Then a crate on the platform opened, and everyone in the game got their preferred lightsaber. The blue blade lightsaber is Rey’s (or Anakin’s). The green one is Luke’s lightsaber from Return of the Jedi. The purple blade lightsaber is Mace Windu’s, while the red is the Kylo Ren design. These weapons hit with 45 damage on most swings. However, a lightsaber slam does 150 damage over an area of effect. Along with new avatar designs like Rey, Finn, and the Sith Trooper, there are also new challenges related to Star Wars.
