The most anticipated non-superhero adaptation in years was 2021’s Dune. Denis Villeneuve’s take on the massive science fiction novel of the same name, written by Frank Herbert in 1965, earned acclaim from fans of the source material and the average theatergoers thanks to its impressive visuals, cast, and score. We’re fortunate that it made enough money to ensure a sequel, and we’re already excited about it. Part 2 is still a few years away, but casting news is already coming in. The latest reports suggest a Florence Pugh cast in Dune: Part 2 and she will be taking the role of Princess Irulan.

Florence Pugh Joins Cast of Dune Part 2 In Role of Princess Irulan

Princess Irulan is one of the first names that you read in Dune. An epigraph of her words begins just about every chapter, providing insight into the chaotic world unfolding on each page. However, the character herself doesn’t appear until much later on in the book. She is the daughter of the 81sst Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV and Anirul, who is a Bene Gesserit.

Florence Pugh has all but confirmed the news of the Dune Part 2 cast addition as Princess Irulan, and is reportedly in the negotiation stage.

A role in such a massive film is no surprise. Not only has she already been nominated for an Oscar for her role in 2019’s Little Women, where she played Amy March, but she’s also made her debut as Yelena Belova in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a role that promises a lot of future appearances. The Dune Part 2 role would also reunite her with Timothee Chalamet, her co-star and love interest in Little Women.

Dune Part 2 is set to start filming later this year, with an anticipated release date of October 20th, 2023 – two years after the first film.

Does Pugh Fit The Character of Princess Irulan?

As mentioned above, Princess Irulan Corrino is quite the royal. Her unique upbringing and ties to the Bene Gesserit make her somebody that you wouldn’t want to mess with. While she will be competing for screen time in Dune Part 2, the character goes on to have a long journey in Frank Herbert’s sequels to Dune. So, if Pugh is taking on the role, then it could open a lot of doors for the future of the franchise.

Visually, Florence Pugh seems like a strong candidate for the role of Princess Irulan in Dune Part 2. She’s got the blonde hair and classic beauty down, even if she isn’t quite as tall or green-eyed as the character is in the books. However, some fans are curious about how Pugh’s persona will fit the complicated one of the Princess.

Princess Irulan is, to put it simply, not the most loveable character. This is especially true when compared to other fan-favorites, some of whom have perished on screen in the first film. But if Pugh has proved anything playing Amy March, it’s that she can make any character likable. That, and that she has undeniable chemistry with Chalamet.
