Eternals Will Bring the First Sex Scene to the MCU and the Franchise Just Got a Whole Lot Spicier
People of all demographics love superhero movies. From little kids who want to imagine themselves in the suits to older movie lovers who will never get over on-screen magic, it’s a genre that’s meant for everybody. Because of the massive audiences, many studios are careful about pushing rating boundaries or showing anything that could make parents reach over and cover their kid’s eyes. But Marvel wants to be known for making big movie moves, and they’re ready to make a big one. Eternals will reportedly feature the first sex scene in the MCU.

News broke earlier this year that the teams behind creating superhero conflict prefer to keep their heroes away from anything considered naughty. In the DC universe, where their movies have always leaned towards a slightly more adult audience, they preferred to keep their intimate scenes for the villains (like Harley Quinn.) The same can almost be said for Marvel, where Jessica Jones has easily had the most fun. Jones is typically considered a vigilante. She gets a pass from the “no fun for heroes” rule. And when I wrote about these differences, I even claimed that while the Marvel/Netflix collaboration was willing to push the envelope, “Disney+ would never.” Well, I was wrong.
We have had our fair share of kisses, womanizing, and flirting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before. But never have we watched two characters go to bed. However, everything is about to change in a few weeks. Eternals is going to bring a lot to the franchise. This includes the MCU’s first gay superhero, but it’s also getting the first sex scene.
The Film Thinks That Marvel Is Ready For A Love Scene
What is most surprising is that the sex scene was always a part of the film’s story. The film’s director, Chloé Zhao, claims that it was in the script before joining the team. When asked about pushing this boundary, the director claims that Marvel Studios was ready to do something different and let things happen naturally. Zhao was excited to see the scene come to life, sharing the following with IndieWire:
“For us to be able to show two people who love each other, not just emotionally and intellectually but also physically, and to have a sex scene that will be seen by a lot of people that shows their love and compassion and gentleness — I think it’s a really beautiful thing.”
Despite the attention that this big first for the MCU is getting, the scene is considered very brief. This comes as no surprise, considering how many other themes the film is dealing with. Who has time for sex when you’re saving the world, anyway?
Does It Even Need To Be A Big Deal?
Sex on screen has always been taboo in Western cultures. How many of us covered our eyes as children during sex scenes in films because we were afraid of what our parents would think if we kept watching? Comparatively, we never did the same for scenes of immense violence, no matter how brutal. If we’re going to encourage studios to toe the line between ratings, why not do it out of scenes of love rather than hate?
You can catch Eternals playing in theaters starting on November 5th if you want to watch the first sex scene in the MCU.
