The Upcoming Blade Movie Starring Mahershala Ali Finds A Director
The upcoming Blade movie from Marvel Studios has found its director in Bassam Tariq. The director is a relative unknown in the industry. However, his first feature length film Mogul Mowgli – starring Riz Ahmed – garnered significant awards buzz when it came out last year. He joins a crew that already has writer Stacy Ossei-Kuffour working on the adaptation based on the Marvel comics.

Star of the movie – Mahershala Ali – has been actively involved in choosing the writers and director for the upcoming Blade film for Marvel. This film is a passion project for Ali, who actually pitched the film to Marvel head Kevin Feige after the actor won an Oscar for Green Book. Ali hand-selected writer Stacy Ossei-Kuffour based on her work with Watchmen. And it is likely that he had a hand in choosing Bassam Tariq as director for Blade as well.
Marvel Studios has been making a concerted effort to diversify their talent behind the camera in recent years. Pakistan-born Bassam Tariq joins other people of color working behind the scenes on the MCU. Directors like Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler, and Nia DaCosta have created some of the best MCU films in recent years. And it makes sense that the star of Blade – Mahershala Ali – would want some diverse perspectives on this iconic black character.
Notably, both Ali and Tariq are active Muslim men. There has also been speculation that the Marvel could be making Blade its first Muslim superhero. This would certainly go a long way towards Marvel’s commitment to showcasing diversity both on-screen and off.
When Can We Anticipate Seeing Blade In The MCU?

The upcoming film is currently titled Blade: The Vampire Slayer. Of course it will follow the vampire-human hybrid as he dedicates his life to eradicating vampires. Little is known about the film’s plot at this time. But we anticipate that it will be part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
Interestingly, a small easter egg in the recent Loki series on Disney+ hinted at the potential for Blade to be involved with the TVA. Mobius specifically mentions vampires in a scene discussing the types of variants that the TVA has dealt with. This is the first time that vampires have been mentioned in the MCU. Is it possible that the multiverse will be responsible for bringing Blade into the sacred timeline? We’ll have to see what Phase 4 brings for the MCU, and what director Bassan Tariq will bring to Blade.
