While racism in the movie industry has often been highlighted, it’s rare that high profile directors are confused for bank robbers. That’s exactly what happened with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, who was briefly arrested under the suspicion of bank robbery back in January. The arrest, while temporary, flew under the radar for several weeks before the news was broken by TMZ. At the same time, Coogler – who also directed Creed – has spoken out about the arrest. In a recent interview, the director notes that it “should never have happened.”

He also claims that the situation has been addressed and resolved.

The situation reportedly arose when Coogler tried to withdraw money from his bank account. He had tried to be discreet about the funds he was withdrawing. If reports are to be believed, the director tried to take $12,000 from his account. That apparently arose suspicions among Bank of America employees. For the sake of his privacy, Ryan Coogler had passed a note to the teller highlighting the amount he wanted to withdraw. It’s been noted, however, that no threats or similar verbiage were included on the note.

Instead, TMZ claims that it read:

“I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.”

Coupled with the fact that the Black Panther director was wearing a face mask – as per local regulations – Bank of America employees believed that he was trying to rob the bank. The cops were subsequently called. It’s been highlighted that two people outside of the bank account were standing near an SUV and were also reportedly arrested. The pair had been linked to Coogler previously. It’s then that the director was arrested and taken from the bank in handcuffs. Several hours later, the police realized the mistake in the situation and released the trio.

Authorities also stressed that the person who initially made the report was reportedly a pregnant African-American woman. They also claim that, when trying to process the withdrawal on her computer, an alert was issued. As a result, she went to her manager to claim that the director was trying to rob the bank. It’s believed that, once Ryan Coogler was released, he wasn’t too pleased at the situation; he reportedly took the badge numbers of the arresting officers. Should anytime have come of the situation since, it’s currently not publicly known.

Coogler Opens Up About The Situation

Now, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has opened up about the situation, speaking to Variety about the arrest. In the statement, the director notes that both he and Bank of America have moved on from the situation.

As he says:

“This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.”

So far, Bank of America has yet to issue a statement on the matter. It’s unclear as to how they and the Black Panther director resolved the situation.
