When the first Shang-Chi trailer dropped back in April, fans were excited to see an all-star Asian cast, including the Simu Liu, Tony Leung, and Awkwafina. However, some were wondering if Wong, Dr. Strange’s Master of the Mystic Arts, would be part of the movie. As one of the only Asian characters who’s had a major speaking role in a Marvel movie (there’s Chloe Bennet and Ming-Na Wen in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Randall Park had a small role in Ant-Man and the Wasp and WandaVision), Wong would’ve been a no-brainer choice for the Shang-Chi world. Unfortunately, Benedict Wong in Shang-Chi was initially not going to happen. In an interview with SYFY WIRE during his press tour for the upcoming Sony Pictures Classic film Nine Days with Winston Duke (Black Panther), Wong said:

“When Shang-Chi was happening, I was so pleased that it was happening but I was a little kind of crestfallen I wasn’t a part of it. And then the call (from Marvel Studios) came. And I was like, ‘Yes!'”

Phew! Wong has been part of the MCU since Doctor Strange in 2016 and has also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He’s set to also appear in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. In the latest Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer (which you can watch at the end of this post), we see Wong facing off with Tim Roth’s Abomination.

In typical Marvel fashion, Wong hasn’t been allowed to say anything about his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but he did share his excitement about being included in the cast. He enthused:

“You know, I’m super thrilled. And then to be sat at a table of Asian excellence, it was amazing. And I’m a big fan of all of those artists. Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love) is a massive idol of mine. So it’s been constant surprises, that’s what (the role of Wong) gives me.”

As promised, here’s the latest trailer. You can see Wong facing off with Abomination at the end:

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is coming out in theaters September 3, 2021.
