Avatar 2 Box Office Sales Reach Over $1 Billion

Avatar 2, officially known as Avatar: The Way of Water, was easily one of the hotly-anticipated movies of 2022. After all, it’s been almost two decades since the original! After numerous delays and setbacks, 20th Century Studios finally released the movie on December 16th. Since they delayed the film, so many times and the film was so expensive, the Avatar 2 box office sales needed to be massive. Otherwise, it wouldn’t make back the cost of production, promotion, and other things. It certainly managed to do that! This week, Variety reported that the film made around $317.1 million in North America. Across international territories, it made $712.7 million. As such, that means its current global box office sales stand at a little over $1 billion! This also means it’s the fastest film from 2022 to cross $1 billion.

However, it’s not the most successful film of 2022. Currently, Jurassic World: Dominion stands at $1.003 billion compared to Avatar: The Way of Water’s $1.025 billion. However, the film took four months to reach $1 billion, while Avatar did it in less than two weeks. Similarly, Top Gun: Maverick took 31 days to reach $1 billion, and Spider-Man: No Way Home took 12 days. Also, the Avatar 2 box office sales make it the third-highest-grossing movie during the COVID-19 era.

This comes after the film made $134 million in America during its first week alone! Similarly, it made $435 internationally at the same time. Naturally, this is a good sign for the film, as its director, James Cameron, said it needed to make “over $2 billion” internationally to break even. Clearly, the film’s on its way there! The film cost $350 million, and the promotion was over $100 million.

In comparison, the first Avatar film made $1 billion in 17 days internationally. Additionally, it became the highest-grossing film ever soon after, with $2.97 billion at the box office.

The original Avatar took 17 days to earn $1 billion at the global box office, and it continued to bring in a ton more and finish as the highest-grossing movie of all time at $2.922 billion. However, adjusted for inflation, the original film made $3.505 billion, putting it just behind Gone With the Wind’s box office of $3.922 billion.

Even so, the Avatar 2 box office sales indicate that this sequel could beat the original. Additionally, this is especially true when you consider all the other high-profile films of recent years. Despite the numerous Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney films, Avatar has remained on top!

It’s even more challenging, considering this is a franchise’s first film. Many other high-grossing films, like Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, come from existing franchises. So, there’s already interest in these franchises, meaning box office sales come more easily. Avatar had none of that and still did well. Clearly, James Cameron knows what he’s doing!

Naturally, the Avatar 2 box office sales give us good hope for the rest of the franchise. Currently, James Cameron has five movies planned for the Avatar franchise, although they don’t all have titles yet. Avatar 3 is in post-production, and 20th Century Studios will release it in 2024. 2 years later, we’ll get Avatar 4, which the cast is filming now. The last entry, Avatar 5, is coming in 2028 and is in pre-production.

But that’s not all! Recently, James Cameron revealed that he’d created Avatar 6 and Avatar 7 if people were interested enough in them. With the way that the Avatar 2 box office sales are going, we wouldn’t be surprised if these end up happening. Obviously, the franchise is a huge success, and if this film can break even, more sequels are almost certain. Maybe we’ll even see some Avatar spin-off games, films, or TV shows similar to Star Wars.

What do you think? Do you believe Avatar: The Way of Water will beat the original movie’s sales? Would you like to see further sequels? Let us know in the comments!
