Ancient Aliens Movie To Be Directed By Cobra Kai Creators
Everyone’s favorite extraterrestrial pseudo-documentary series is getting a movie! The Cobra Kai creators are writing a script for an Ancient Aliens movie thanks to a deal between Legendary (which controls the Ancient Aliens Movie rights) and Counterbalance Entertainment (the creators and showrunners of the aforementioned Netflix hit). Counterbalance’s Josh Heald will direct the feature with the company’s Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg producing, along with Luke Ryan writing the script and executive producing.
So, What Is Ancient Aliens About Anyway?
Ancient Aliens is a History Channel series that premiered in 2009. It’s filmed in a documentary style and “explores the controversial theory that extraterrestrials have visited Earth for millions of years.” Each episode looks at the accounts, controversies, and theories surrounding the age-old debate of whether extraterrestrial life has visited Earth. Throughout each show, experts (I say this with a grain of salt) talk about alien theories, offering their own insight and opinions. Some of the more questionable experts have included Reverend Barry Downing (he described angels as “ancient astronauts”) and creationists like Michael Cremo and Willie E. Dye.
The show has been largely panned by archaeologists and historians as promoting and presenting pseudoarcheology, pseudoscience, and racism. Many argue that the show caters to the entertainment factor of aliens and conspiracy theories, but the fanbase doesn’t seem to mind. The series has been going strong for sixteen seasons and has even inspired its own convention: AlienCon, an event that is based around Ancient Astronaut Theorist discussions and has attracted around 50,000 visitors a year since 2016.
Is This A Good Pairing?
While this might seem like a strange combination, the pairing of the Cobra Kai team and Ancient Aliens could work. Given the popularity of Cobra Kai (it’s spawned reaction videos, memes, and lots of quotable lines), and the loyal fanbase of the History Channel series, it makes sense that Ryan, Heald, Hurtwitz, and Schlossberg were brought on to create more addictive content. In addition, having a popular series such as Ancient Aliens connected to Counterbalance Entertainment could continue to elevate the studio in the entertainment media world.
The story itself will be a “two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts, confronting the theories and questions raised by the popular docuseries,” which sounds like it might be more of an adventure movie. Personally, I think this would be a better fit for a topic that involves aliens and conspiracy theories. Though in terms of real history, this film may be as accurate as Alien Affliction, a B horror movie from the early 2000s.
