Between remakes, remasters, and good old-fashioned ports to new consoles, popular games never seem to go away. Some of the most memorable games from the last two console generations came way of Sony’s Naughty Dog studio. Between releases in the Uncharted franchise and the eerily-poignant The Last of Us series, Sony is sitting on a few golden eggs. With a new TV series on the way plus a wildly successful run for The Last of Us Part II, Sony is hoping to make the most of the increased interest in the latter franchise. We now know that also means developing a The Last of Us PS5 remake for the new console. This is the latest from a new report at Sony.

Is Now the Right Time for a The Last of Us PS5 Remake?

In a blockbuster Bloomberg report, Jason Schreier is reporting that Sony is in the midst of some major developments. The most surprising to me was the fact that there will be a The Last of Us PS5 remake coming soon. The Last Of Us Part II controversy certainly dominated headlines for most of 2020. Despite this negative press, the game took home numerous awards for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020 among other big shows.

This week when I posted my Star Wars Republic Commando review for Nintendo Switch, I mentioned the role that remakes and remasters play in our gaming lives. If you’re a fan of a game, then you’re likely not going to be upset if it gets another run on newer consoles. The question is when does a game need a remake? If you look at the original release date, then The Last of Us is sort of on the fence. The original game released back in 2013. Just under a decade seems short, but we are on a new, more powerful console now.

If you’re a fan of these games, then you’re probably pretty happy with this news. Overall, the improvements shown in The Last of Us Part II could help enhance the original. There’s also an exciting The Last of Us TV series on the way starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. The series is among Sony’s most popular running franchises, so it’s likely hoping to capitalize while the iron is hot.
