The Final Fantasy series spans a number of genres, platforms, and worlds. One area we haven’t seen many games in the franchise explore is the action RPG route. With a number of games mimicking the Dark Souls format, it’s no wonder that developers are considering the format for future projects. One rumor picking up buzz around numerous credible sources today is about the next Final Fantasy game. A Team Ninja-developed Final Fantasy spin-off is reportedly going to grab inspiration from the Souls style games fans know and love. For more on the rumors, let’s dive into what we know so far. If you’re a Final Fantasy fan, then you’ll want to hear about this.

Two credible sources are reporting that Team Ninja is working on its next project. That project happens to be a Souls-inspired Final Fantasy title. Fanbyte grabbed wind of the rumors on fan message boards and reached out to their own contacts. The new project’s dev team is Koei Tecmo’s developer Team Ninja, maker of Nioh, Ninja Gaiden, and other games. Fanbyte reports that a possible name is Final Fantasy Origin, and Square Enix could announce the game this year. Wccftech took things further and announced that the game will be a PS5 exclusive. Exclusivity is timed, so it will only last for a certain period then the game is free to release on other platforms.

Overall, the spin-off title could be huge for Square Enix. The studio is still looking to expand the Final Fantasy name outside of the remakes and mainline series. In my Outriders review for Xbox, I mentioned that Square Enix is expanding in big ways. Moving into a new partnership with Team Ninja is a big step forward. In short, the mix of studio influences and ideas can help bring Final Fantasy to new fans. One of 2020’s top-selling gamesFinal Fantasy VII Remake, proved that Square Enix is ready to push boundaries.

Personally, I think the Souls approach could work well for this series. I’m excited to see what comes next. Overall, most fans will just be ready for a new Final Fantasy game no matter what it is. If you’re interested in the new Team Ninja Final Fantasy spin-off, then let us know in the comments!
