It seems as if a Black Panther open-world game is in the works. Earlier today, Jeff Grubb appeared on Giant Bomb. In the episode, they discussed the possibility of a new Black Panther game currently in the works.

During Comic-Con, we got to see the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. And, there’s been lots of news coming out about the character. We also covered the surprise exit in the Black Panther Avengers storyline. We also looked at Black Panther Wakanda Forever characters in the movie.

As far as we know, it’ll be a single-player game. It’s interesting since it’s under development by EA. And, the company has been moving toward its sports and multiplayer releases. Perhaps the move comes thanks to the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

The game will start with the last Black Panther being dead. Apparently, the player will have to overcome different challenges. Their goal is to become the new Black Panther.

Black Panther’s success may move into gaming

The plot is still unclear. Players may take on the role of T’Challa, taking the Black Panther mantle. But, it could also be about an entirely new character. The latter would certainly be an interesting take. Yet, fans might love to take on T’Challa’s role.

Nevertheless, it’s an expected move for the character. Black Panther has seen incredible success and popularity in the last year.

The first Black Panther movie earned over a billion at the box office. It became one of the most successful superhero films in the world. And, he’s seen guest appearances in countless movies. He’s been in Civil War, Infinity War, and The Avengers Endgame.

Curiously, EA is developing the title. The company has moved away from single-player titles. But, the character’s popularity might be enough to convince them otherwise. The game doesn’t appear to have any live service features as well.

However, it’s still too early to tell what you can expect from the game. It might have a slew of microtransactions for all we know. And, we’re yet to know anything about the game’s plot. So far, we only know the setup and aim.

The Black Panther open-world game is still in early development

Right now, we can only tell that the game is starting development. The company might aim to build on Jedi: Fallen Order’s success. So, it’s understandable that the details are quite limited right now.

According to Grubb, the game only has the concept nailed. Players will take on the role of an aspiring Black Panther. The earlier incarnation will have died at the start of the story. And, the protagonist will have to complete challenges to earn the title.

For the moment, EA seems to refer to the game as “Project Rainier.” It might be a hint to Washington’s Mount Rainier. That’s because EA’s Seattle studio is in charge of development. Kevin Stephens, former Monolith Productions boss, heads the studio.

Stephens joined EA last May. His experience includes the Middle Earth titles, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. News confirmed that his studio would work on an open-world title. So, it lines up perfectly with today’s announcement.

So, what do we know so far?

That tweet sums up basically everything we can tell about the game. Project Rainier is probably a brand-new Black Panther open-world game. And, the developer has the experience of working on Middle Earth’s amazing titles.

Players will have the opportunity to become the new Black Panther. And, it’ll be single-player only. EA will be the publisher of the game. Plus, the studio behind it is new, despite the head’s experience.

Yet, it’s still too early in development. We don’t even know if it’ll be connected to Wakanda Forever.
