Playing Marvel’s Avengers Beta—Square Enix Has a Gem on their Hands

Full disclosure, I’m not the biggest gamer. That’s Taylor Bauer’s beat. But I’m on the comics beat, so here we are. I’m the “why is that so expensive, I’ll wait for a Black Friday deal in a year or so” kind of gamer. However, Marvel’s Avengers tempted me, especially with the beta playing option. What’s the harm in previewing a game that I might one day play when I have the time. But…well…I’ll have to make time because just playing for a couple of hours over the Beta testing weekend might finally make this a game I need to own, all goodies included, day one.

Playing Marvel’s Avengers Beta…What Are We Even Allowed to Talk About?

For legal reasons, let’s focus on gameplay and story we’ve seen in the trailers. As we’ve seen, the story starts on a brand new Avengers Hellicarrier in San Francisco. Within minutes, unknown terrorists attack the Golden Gate Bridge, and we’re off! We play as Thor first, which was a great choice since he is a brawler (like Hulk) and a blaster (like Iron Man). Square Enix gives us a perfect taste of each character in the opening sequence. We fly around shooting things as Iron Man, smash things as Hulk, and wield the shield as Captain America. But it’s Black Widow who steals the opening sequence.

Every multi-character game has its duds. Those characters you barely even remember because you used them so infrequently, they basically didn’t exist. Who remembers playing as Beast in X-Men Legends? If you just went, “Well, he wasn’t a playable character in XML,” you’d be incorrect. He wasn’t a playable character in X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse or any of the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance games that followed. In XML, he was a playable character, and his big power move was…hunching down into a perfect ball and rolling around to knock down bad guys. Like that kid in Hook:

But in the playing the beta so far, I loved playing as all five of Marvel’s Avengers. Yet with so much power that the four male characters have, it’d be easy to assume that Black Widow wouldn’t be as impressive. Well, she is. We get a great fight scene with her, and some of the best graphics of the beta so far.

The full release of Marvel’s Avengers is September 4th, until then, have fun playing the beta on the weekends available. And try to remember that you need to eat and sleep because it’s going to be addictive. And we’re just going get more heroes, like Hawkeye and Spider-Man (for PS4).
