Summer 2019 is going to be a busy time for Marvel and DC. Things are boiling up at the cinemas as we have already seen fan remarks pitting Shazam! Against Captain Marvel. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 just released that the third and final film will use James Gunn’s script. Gunn is also working on a Suicide Squad reboot.
Both Marvel and DC have comic release schedules coming up. Fresh debuts include Savage Avengers, a Conan adventure theme, DCeased, another zombie-themed comic, and a Batman epic that just might be final one from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo.
CBD: Amazing Spider-Man
In comics, starting on May 4th, Free Comic Book Day will see both Marvel and DC releasing new villain-based stories. There is CBD: Amazing Spider-Man from Marvel, which will feature a new storyline that will see the return of Carnage and the Venom story. DC will release Year of the Villain #1, featuring new stories based on major villains in the DCU. The stage will be set for events that will also influence Justice League, Batman, and Action Comics.
Batman #70, coming in May, will start a new storyline named “The Fall and the Fallen”. The story, which will be from King and artist Mikel Janin, will finally answer the cliffhanger that was Batman #60, when Bruce Wayne’s father raises the stakes, and this new story arc will explain why his father kept the torment on his own son.
Conan the Barbarian
At Marvel, expect Conan, the Barbarian, to be welcomed as a member of the Avenger team in May. Conan will appear in Savage Avengers, a story from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Mike Deodato, Jr. A violent new series, Savage Avengers places Conan among other tough fighters including Wolverine, Venom, Elektra, and Punisher.
A new Superman oversized one-shot, Leviathan Rising Special #1, is coming that will feature new stories and sets the stage for a Lois lane comic from Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins and a Jimmy Olsen comic, which will be from Matt Fraction and Steve Lieber.
We have to be ready for the possible death of an X-Men and the Hellfire Club making a comeback. Emma Frost will be the new Black King and Mystique will be the new White King as was hinted on the cover of Uncanny X-Men #18.
Heroes in Crisis
May will see the climax for Heroes in Crisis, with only one final chapter remaining from writer Tom King and artist Clay Mann. We look forward to the issue providing answers on the true killer at Sanctuary, and how the DC heroes respond to the tragedy.
Batman: Last Knight on Earth
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo will reunite in May for what could be their final epic, Batman: Last Knight on Earth. The miniseries has Bruce Wayne waking up in an Arkham Asylum in the future and him realizing that he was not Batman in a twisted, post-apocalyptic DCU.
Spiderman/Deadpool will see its 50th issue, marking the end of the superhero comedy. With the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, Peter Parker and Wade Wilson team up for one last time.
Marvel will also take a deep dive into the old Legends universe with a Star Wars project in May. Based on the original 1977-1986 Star Wars comic, Star Wars #108, from writer Matt Rosenberg and a team of artists, paves the way for a unique direction for the franchise.
