The Expanse TV Show Gets Tie-In Graphic Novels To Bridge Gap Between Seasons
The world of The Expanse is, well, expansive and keeps growing every day. The series by James S.A. Corey comprises eight books with a new one on the way. There are also half a dozen novellas and short stories published in the universe. This huge amount of text adds depth to the world of the tv show on Amazon, and there are more stories on the way. A limited graphic novel series that ties into The Expanse show is on the way from Boom Studios. The new graphic novels will pick up after the end of the fourth season of the show. They will focus on the characters of Avasarala and Bobbie Draper. Let’s take a look at what we know about the new Expanse graphic novels coming from Boom! Studios.

The four-issue limited series written by Corinne Bechko (Green Lantern) and illustrated by artist Alejandro Aragon will be out in December. It follows the character of Avasarala as she attempts to take down black market weapons dealers. After losing an election at the end of the fourth season, Avasarala needs a win to regain respect and reclaim her former position. With the help of former Martian marine and occasional accomplice Bobbie Draper, Avasarala takes on a new challenge unlike anything she has dealt with so far.
An official synopsis from Boom! Studios tells us the following about the new Expanse graphic novels.
The Expanse graphic novels find “Chrisjen Avasarala at the end of the television show’s fourth season. The longtime Secretary-General of the United Nations finds herself dealing with the outcome of the tumultuous elections for her position. She is far from Earth, but not its politics. When Bobbie Draper – a former Martian marine – brings Avasarala intel on an intergalactic black market weapons ring, Avasarala sees a chance to reclaim her political position through a clandestine operation. But as Draper digs deeper into this secret cabal, she soon realizes the threat they pose is far larger – and closer to home – than either of them ever imagined.”
Expanding Into Graphic Novels
The world of The Expanse has ventured into graphic novel format in the past with a series of one-shots released by ComiXology in 2017. Those comics focused on the key characters of the show – the crew of the Rocinante. The stories revealed the origins of Holden, Naomi, Alex, and Amos. They were collected into a graphic novel by Boom! Studios in The Expanse: Origins. As of now, all of the graphic novels in The Expanse universe are direct tie-ins to the show on Amazon.

No word yet on when the fifth season of The Expanse will drop on Amazon. But since this new Expanse graphic novel ties into the upcoming season, chances are good that season 5 will be coming at the end of this year or early in 2021.
