The upcoming adaptation of the popular Neil Gaiman graphic novel series Sandman on Netflix has just cast some of its major leads. Joining Tom Sturridge in the show is Star Wars alum Gwendolyn Christie. And Christie isn’t the only Game of Thrones actor joining the cast, as actor Charles Dance is also onboard for Sandman. Let’s break down the recent casting news for Sandman on Netflix, and see when we can expect the show to finally come to our screens.

First up is Tom Sturridge (Sweetbitter) who will play the lead role of Morpheus aka Dream. This iconic role was the first to be cast back in September of 2020. The series will follow this character through time and various realities as he appears throughout history in various guises. But the real plot gets going when the character is imprisoned by an ambitious group seeking immortality. His escape from that captivity, and his search for three artifacts of power (a helm, a ruby, and a pouch full of dreaming sand) that rightfully belong to him will likely be the real focus of the series as it was in the graphic novels.

Two Game of Thrones Actors Join Sandman On Netflix

Next up is Brienne of Tarth herself. Actress Gwendolyn Christie has been tapped to play the ruler of Hell – Lucifer. This is an interesting bit of gender-swapped casting, since Lucifer is typically portrayed as a male figure both in biblical lore and in the mythology of the Sandman stories. Morpheus will visit Lucifer in the Sandman series in an effort to reclaim one of his magical artifacts.

Another Game of Thrones actor in the cast is actor Charles Dance. He will play Roderick Burgess who is a “charlatan and magician.” Burgess leads a group called the Order of Ancient Mysteries as they attempt to imprison the character of Death (Dream’s older sister) in an effort to obtain immortality. However, they accidentally capture Dream instead and keep him captive in an attempt to unearth the secrets of The Endless.

More Actors Join The Ensemble Cast For Sandman On Netflix

Several ensemble cast members have also been announced. Actress Vivienne Acheampong (The Witches) is onboard to play Lucienne. This is another gender-swapped role from the Lucien of the graphic novels who is the head librarian of the Dreaming. Boyd Holbrook (Narcos) will play The Corinthian, a nightmare created by Dream who goes rogue.

Finally we have a pair of murderous brothers in Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, and Asim Chaudhry Abel who will play Abel. These two are stuck in an eternal bloody cycle that introduced the concept of murder to humanity long ago. However, they also help Dream after he escapes captivity.

Several Major Roles Have Not Yet Announced Casting

Interestingly, Gaiman indicated back in 2020 that the role of Death had also been cast. However, that role was conspicuously absent from the casting news that was just released. Nor is there any actress listed in that role on the show’s IMDB page. It is unclear why the casting for this role is being kept secret, but hopefully we will learn more about the actress behind Death – and more of the Sandman cast – in the coming months.

Another role that has notably not yet been cast is a major DC character – John Constantine otherwise known as Hellblazer. In the Sandman graphic novels, Morpheus teams up with Constantine to track down one of his missing artifacts. However it is unclear whether or not Constantine will appear in the Netflix adaptation of Sandman

Rights might be a little tricky with the character of Constantine, who is technically owned by Warner Bros. Constantine has recently been included as part of the CW’s Arrowverse, appearing in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and his own show from 2014 – 2015. When questioned about Constantine’s potential appearance in Sandman, author Neil Gaiman merely advised fans to ‘wait and see.’ And right now that is all we can do.

Sandman Is Filming Now For Release Hopefully This Year

Production for Sandman was intermittent during 2020 due to production shutdowns. But we do know that the series is currently filming in London. Neil Gaiman also recently tweeted about the show filming an infamous ‘diner episode’ last week. We also know that the first season of Sandman on Netflix will be 11 episodes, and Gaiman is already at work on writing a second season of the series.

The Sandman series on Netflix does not yet have a release date, but it was originally slated for release in 2021. If production on the show has truly kicked off, then it might be possible for us to see Sandman finally come to our screens before the end of the year. But as Gaiman himself advises, we will just have to wait and see.
