An N.K. Jemisin new book and comic series is on the way as the author continues her reign as the queen of speculative fiction. After the success of her Hugo-award winning Broken Earth series, Jemisin published a book of short stories titled How Long ’til Black Future Month? Now she is diving into the world of comic books, and publishing a new fantasy novel.

Jemisin spoke exclusively with Entertainment Weekly last week about her new novel. She describes The City We Became which is her first novel to be published after completing her Hugo-award winning Broken Earth series – which has also been optioned by TNT.

N.K. Jemisin New Book and Comic Series Coming Soon

Jemisin’s new fantasy book builds upon a short story Jemisin wrote titled The City Born Great – which is available to read for free over at Tor. Jemisin described the series to EW with an intriguing teaser. “The city of New York comes to life — literally… The city has developed sentience and an ability to act on its own.”

The City We Became will follow five heroes chosen by the sentient city to fight a “magical interdimensional battle.” The novel sounds like a strange romp through Jemisin’s unique imagination where “backyard pools turn into portals to monsterville, traffic on the FDR becomes a literal, tentacled, killer.” The novel definitely sounds like a lot of “monstrous fun” after the bleakness of the Broken Earth series.  The City We Became will be published March 24, 2020 and is currently available for pre-order. This is just the first release of Jemisin’s new book and comic series that are on the way.

Jemisin Tackles Green Lantern In Far Sector

N.K. Jemisin New Book and Comic - Far Sector DC/VERTIGO

This is not the only project Jemisin has coming up however. In April she announced that she is working on a new Green Lantern comic. Far Sector will be the first new offering from Young Animal, an imprint of DC Comics headed by Gerard Way.

Jemisin wrote on twitter that this series is “meant to be unlike other Green Lantern stories. A unique ring. One Lantern, on her own apart from the Corps — a frontier sheriff. Except her “frontier” is a futuristic society with its own complex history of colonialism and change.” In Jo’s sector Jemisin will introduce the City Enduring: “a massive Dyson-Swarm metropolis of 20 billion people.”

The Green Lantern in question will be Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, whose very name evokes a history of freedom-fighting and human rights activism. In Far Sector Jemisin draws inspiration from American history ‘as a source of how societies change and how rebellions occur.’

N.K. Jemisin also has a penchant for making history, as well as evoking it in her work. In 2016 she became the first of black genre authors to win the Best Novel award at the Hugos. And last year she became the first person to win the Hugo award three years in a row. Yes, she has a Hugo for each successive title in her Broken Earth series. Jemisin also likes to blur the lines between sci-fi and fantasy in her work, specifically “the concept of whether what was happening was magic, or super advanced science.” We are sure that Jemisin will continue to surprise and delight readers with her innovative worlds in these new offerings.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
