After numerous layoffs at DC Universe and DC Comics in late 2020, Michelle Wells became the interim Editor-in-Chief of the company. Wells moved up to the position from her former job as head of the company’s YA graphic novel imprints. The author of several YA novels, Wells has also worked extensively with large publishing companies including Disney, Penguin Random House, and Simon & Schuster. Now, Michelle Wells is moving on from DC Comics to take over as Chief Content Officer at Tapas Media.

Tapas Media is an open-publishing platform for webcomics, and has been called the “Youtube of Comics.” They describe themselves as “a next generation media company offering bite-sized content through its online mobile platform.” Founded in 2012 by Chang Kim, the company also boasts that 63% of their content is created by women.

Wells will assume a newly created role within the company as Chief Content Officer at Tapas Media. She will oversee new original content and intellectual properties for the company. Wells will help develop a new vision for Tapas as they continue to grow. Her experience with DC Comics, Disney, and various publishing companies will certainly come in handy for this venture.

“Tapas is known for groundbreaking, next-generation storytelling, and I’m excited to join such an innovative team,” says Michelle Wells. “As storytellers, it’s our responsibility to create content that reflects the authentic voices and experiences of the world around us. So we’ll be producing original IP with established creators. While also finding and supporting up-and-coming talent and their unique perspectives. We’ll be exploring partnership opportunities with traditional publishers, as well as working to adapt our content for film and TV. With such amazing opportunities ahead, I cannot wait to join the talented content team to continue delivering successes both on and off the Tapas platform!”

We look forward to seeing what kind of content Tapas Media will produce with Michelle Wells at the helm.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
