Shang-Chi Post Credit Scenes Explained By Director, Screenwriter
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings came out this weekend and it’s already racking up a lot of positive buzz (check out our Shang-Chi spoiler free review). There were kickass action sequences, quippy dialogue, and a diverse cast, but what many people were talking about afterwards were the Shang-Chi post credit scenes spoilers. Just a heads up, this post is going to be talking about some major plot points, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet, STOP READING RIGHT NOW. Bookmark this page and come back after you’ve seen it!
For those that have watched Shang-Chi, we gotta talk about the not one, but TWO post credit scenes. Both of them move the MCU forward and establish the characters we met in Shang-Chi firmly in Marvel’s Phase 4.

In the first Shang-Chi post credit spoilers scenes (it’s actually mid-credit scene to be accurate), we see Shang-chi (played by Simu Liu) and Katy (Awkwafina) talking to Wong about the rings. Also in attendance are…Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel!) and Bruce Banner (Hulk!). Wong, Danvers, and Banner are all stumped as to the origins of the rings, only citing that they are very, very old. Wong also says that whenever the rings were used, they sent out a signal into space. Whether it’s to another civilization, planet, or multiverse, we’ll just have to wait and see!
In an interview with Inverse, screenwriter Dave Callaham explained that this scene was written late in production and was supposed to help explain the origins of the Ten Rings. He said:
“That was something Destin hatched. I didn’t see it until a couple days before they shot it, at which point I was asked to help. There were scenes shot for the movie that suggested one origin. There were scenes shot later that suggested a different origin. We didn’t know which one we wanted to say it was. We intentionally chose that (the mid-credit scene) as the final version. We realized, in these two hours, it doesn’t make any difference at all where it comes from. That’s not the story we’re telling. But it sure is an interesting question we’d love to talk about later. Or someone will.”
In the original comics the Ten Rings were alien relics left behind in a spaceship. Since Shang-Chi left their origins open-ended, Cretton (or anybody else) can add their own unique twist on it, which could be exciting for expanding Phase 4.
As for the appearance of Captain Marvel and the Hulk? Callaham said they needed to be in the scene because they’re the experts on science and space. Can’t argue with that.
Shang-Chi Post Credit Scenes Spoiler 2

In the second Shang-Chi Post credit scenes spoiler, we learn that Shang-Chi’s sister, Xialing (played by Meng’er Zhang) is the new head of the Ten Rings and the final scene shows several female assassins training along with the males. What direction Xialing will take the new Ten Rings is unclear, but it seems she’s still defying her father even in death by allowing women to train. I fully support the women power, although if they’re going to start killing innocent people, then I may be rooting for Shang-Chi to bring his sister down.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton also interviewed with Inverse and said the post credit scenes were a way to round out Xialing’s character arc. He said:
“To me, that last scene is really reflective of the beginning of Xialing taking control of her life, and stepping into the place that was actually denied her for most of her life. It’s very empowering to me and I’m excited to imagine what is going to happen to her in the future.”
Callaham added that they knew Xialing was going to make it to the end early on and they had always planned to have it in. He said:
“I think (Xialing’s post-credits scene) got written before we shot the movie. I guess it’s in the final film because it was thought to be cool, a juicy idea for where the story might go in the future, whether that means Xialing’s or Shang-Chi’s or just the organization’s. But that was always there.”
Zhang also interviewed with Inverse and said she’s in the dark about where her character is going in the MCU but says she’s “eager to find out too.” When asked about how she thinks Xialing will run the Ten Rings, she said it could go the way of Wenwu or she could carve a new path for herself. She explained:
“I think in many ways she is like her father. She loves power. So I’m really looking forward to seeing what she’s going to do.”
There’s no doubt that these Shang-Chi post credit scenes are setting us up for an exciting Phase 4! What are your thoughts on these Shang-Chi spoilers? Let us know in the comments below!
