Yoda Gets A Starring Role In New Star Wars: The High Republic Comics From IDW
The upcoming Star Wars publishing event – The High Republic – has been delayed until 2021. However, there is still plenty of news around the upcoming books and graphic novels. One of these stories – Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – will heavily feature everyone’s favorite Jedi Master – Yoda. The High Republic takes place hundreds of years before the events of the Star Wars movies. This means that we will get to see a much younger version of Yoda. Let’s take a look at the new IDW comics featuring Yoda.
Yoda Will Mentor The Padawans Of The High Republic Adventures
Daniel José Older will write The High Republic Adventures comics. He is the author behind Last Shot, a Star Wars novel that tied into Solo: A Star Wars Story. Older also contributed to the upcoming anthology Star Wars: From A Certain Point of View. Now the author gets to cross one thing off his writing bucket list: writing the character of Yoda, something he never thought he would have a chance to do.
According to StarWars.com, the younger Yoda of The High Republic Adventures is a journeyman. He is already serving on the Jedi Council, and mentoring padawans. Odds are likely that Yoda will be teaching some of the padawans who have already been introduced in The High Republic teasers, such as Farzaza and Luca. Older discusses Yoda’s role in the upcoming comic series.
“We meet Yoda in IDW’s The High Republic Adventures series doing what he loves best: looking out for the young folks. In this case, a group of Padawans traveling around the galaxy to learn the ways of the Jedi with a hands-on approach… The Force study abroad program, basically.”

Updating Yoda For A New Time Period
Due to the visual nature of the comics, the artists behind The High Republic Adventures had to update Yoda’s appearance. Since The High Republic takes place 200 years before the Star Wars prequels, Yoda should appear only slightly younger than his appearance in The Phantom Menace.

However, the Jedi ensembles in concept art for The High Republic are very different from the Jedi robes that we see in the movies. Architectural details from Jedi Temples were worked into the Grecian-style white robes with gold trim. This reflects the ‘golden age of the Jedi’ that The High Republic will focus on.
“The goal was to update Yoda, but to be careful and be true to the Yoda that we all know and love,” according to Lucasfilm art director Troy Alders.
We look forward to seeing Yoda in the new comics from IDW as part of The High Republic Adventures. The series is set for publication in January of 2021.
