Today is Doctor Who Day around the world. Although this year didn’t bring us any big announcements or news there is still plenty of content to celebrate. Why not mark the day by diving into the new cross-platform Doctor Who experience known as Time Lord Victorious? Let’s explore the project and see what content is available now.

What Is Time Lord Victorious?

The multimedia event tells a new story in the Whovian universe and incorporates some of your favorite Doctors from the past. The series focuses on the 8th, 9th, and 10th Doctors and marks the return of Christopher Eccleston to the Whovian world. Some of your favorite companions and aliens are also along for the ride, with appearances by Rose Tyler and the lovable Ood.

According to Big Finish Productions, the Time Lord Victorious project “will tell a new and untold story. Set within the Dark Times at the start of the universe, when even the Eternals were young. Following several Doctors across space and time as they defend their home planet from a terrible race, this is a story like no other.”

Time Lord Victorious will tell this story across a variety of platforms including comics, short stories, audio plays, and webcasts. The event began in August and will run through January of 2021. Presumably this will lead up to the premiere of the next season of Doctor Who. But it is unclear if this new story will affect the current Doctor in any way.

What Is Available So Far For Time Lord Victorious?

The first chapter of Time Lord Victorious came in the form of several webcasts released in August. These “Unit Field Logs” come from scientists in the Doctor Who universe who are investigating a ‘Time Fracture’ at a UNIT black site. There were four webcasts in total, with the final one featuring another fan-favorite character: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

Following the webcasts is a comic book in the Doctor Who universe. This comic is called The Defender Of The Daleks and features the 10th Doctor. Released by Titan Comics, the first issue of an ongoing series in the Time Lord Victorious project sees Ten take on the Daleks yet again. Released in September, a synopsis from Titan tells us the following. “When the Doctor faces his ancient foes once again, it soon becomes clear that things aren’t what they seem – time is all wrong and something is coming that terrifies even the Daleks.

More comics have also been published in the official Doctor Who magazine with the series Monstrous Beauty. This story sees the return of the 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler. Delving into some deep Whovian lore and Gallifreyan politics, this comic is also notable for introducing a young female incarnation of Rassilon – one of the founders of the Time Lords.

Another recently released aspect of Time Lord Victorious is an animated Doctor Who spin-off about the Daleks that premiered last week on the official YouTube channel. Each episode will be ten minutes long and there will be five episodes in total.

The Time Lord Victorious Story Really Starts With The Novel

The main Time Lord Victorious Story really begins with the first book in the project. The Knight, the Fool and the Dead by Steve Cole was released by BBC Books in early October. It follows the 10th Doctor once more as he travels back to the mysterious ‘dark times’ that haunt the entire story. A synopsis for the book tells us what to expect.

“The Doctor travels back to the Dark Times, an era where life flourishes and death is barely known… Then come the Kotturuh – creatures who spread through the cosmos dispensing mortality. They judge each and every species and decree its allotted time to live. For the first time, living things know the fear of ending. And they will go to any lengths to escape this grim new spectre, death. The Doctor is an old hand at cheating death. Now, at last, he can stop it at source. He is coming for the Kotturuh, ready to change everything so that life wins from the start. Not just the last of the Time Lords. The Time Lord Victorious.”

Audio Dramas Are A Big Part of The Story

Following this story are a pair of audio plays from Big Finish Productions starring The Master. The first is ‘Master Thief,’ written by Sophie Iles. This audio drama feature the voice of Jon Culshaw imitating Roger Delgado’s original Master. The second is ‘Lesser Evils’ written by Simon Guerrier and has Culshaw replicating Anthony Ainley’s version of the villainous Time Lord. These stories see The Master facing off against the Kotturuh as well. Interestingly, these stories seem to show The Master protecting local innocents in a move that is very unlike him.

Another audio drama that came out last month is a story of the 8th Doctor, played once again by Paul McGann. The story is called “He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not” and was written by Carrie Thompson. In this story, the 8th Doctor faces off against a villainous Ood named… Brian? Not the scariest name, but sure let’s roll with it. This audio drama is followed up by another 8th Doctor story called “The Enemy of My Enemy” written by Tracy Ann Baines that just came out last week. This one finds the 8th Doctor facing off against the Daleks, as they attempt to form a dangerous alliance with another race.

What Is Still To Come From Time Lord Victorious?

So far all of the issues for Defender of the Daleks and Monstrous Beauty have been released, wrapping up those stories and leading into the next phase of the Time Lord Victorious event. But there is still much more to come.

The next release is a highly anticipated crossover event between multiple Doctors. Another audio drama, but with a twist as it will be released on vinyl (?!?) finds the 8th and 10th Doctors teaming up (sort of) in a story called “Echoes of Extinction.” Both Tennant and McGann will play their respective Doctors as each of them face down a deadly foe in a moment that is linked across time. The reason for the vinyl recording is so that you can listen to one story per side, and it doesn’t seem to matter which order you listen in. Don’t despair if you have no record player, however. Big Finish will release the audio dramas online via a digital download in December.

A synopsis from Big Finish tells us the following about “Echoes of Extinction.”

“Trapped, a haunted monster waits to consume new victims. It needs help. It needs a doctor. Unfortunately, it also needs to kill whoever it meets. Thrust into immediate danger, and on the back-foot, it will take all of the Doctor’s ingenuity to triumph. Two interlinked adventures. Two Doctors. One foe.”

Multiple Doctors Will Team Up In The End

Also on the horizon are more audio dramas including another 10th Doctor story called “The Minds of Magnox” due for release on December 3rd. There will also be another 8th Doctor audio drama featuring the Daleks – “Mutually Assured Destruction – out on December 9th. And another Doctor crossover event will happen with the next book All Flesh Is Grass by Una McCormack. That book will see the 8th, 9th, and 10th Doctors teaming up for real in the Dark Times to fight against the alien Kutturuh.

The sheer quantity of content that is coming out of Time Lord Victorious is sure to keep any Whovian busy until the premiere of the next season. And we always love digging into Doctor Who lore to uncover mysteries and new stories.
