Team Flash is losing two of its original members in season 8, which the CW already ordered. Actors Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes will leave The Flash by the end of the season. Both of them have been a part of the show since the pilot, though Cavanagh has played a number of characters in a “different version of the same person” bit that, admittedly, started to wear a bit thin. Similarly, Carlos Valdes’ character Cisco has been in a weird place for the past few seasons. His departure was rumored before, though debunked at the last Comic-Con panel for The Flash. The fate of both actors’ character remains unclear, however it is a comic-book world so the potential for them to return for guests spots seems to always be open.

Once Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes leave The Flash, only four original castmembers will remain. Grant Gustin is attached for season 8 (and possibly a season after that). Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, and Jesse L. Martin, however, are reportedly still working on deals to return. In the season 7 premiere of The Flash, new characters have stepped in to fill roles in Team Flash, keeping the cast dynamic and varied. Yet, the loss of two central figures in the show feels like a big deal. Yet, as the Arrowverse approaches its 10th anniversary next year, these sorts of changes are inevitable.

The show that started it all, Arrow, ended their run last year after the Crisis On Infinite Earths event. Also, a number of long-term characters in the sister series Legends of Tomorrow exited the show as well. In fact, the next season of Legends of Tomorrow may only feature a single castmember from the first season, Caity Lotz.

Showrunner for The Flash Eric Wallace told

“Tom and Carlos have been an integral part of our show for seven seasons and will be greatly missed…. Both are incredible talents who created beloved characters that fans and audiences around the world have come to love. Which is why we are happily keeping the door open for return appearances.”

It’s unclear if the decision for Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes to leave The Flash was theirs or the network’s. As original castmembers, their quotes have likely gone up, meaning it’s more costly to keep the ensemble together. Though, plenty of actors like to move on to different roles and opportunities after spending time on a popular TV show. In this case, it feels like the decision to move on was, at least, mutual. Though, who knows? Either way, the showrunner is on-record saying they could return if they desire. So, fans may get to see Harrison Wells or the Reverse Flash and Cisco/Vibe again in the future.

The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 P.M. Eastern on the CW.
