Smallville Animated Series Still In The Works, Says Stars

Smallville played an integral part of my youth: the first season premiered when I was in middle school and I continued to watch through college (best way to spend Thursday and Friday nights!) and early adulthood. So I was thrilled when Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling (Lex Luthor and Clark Kent, respectively), announced that they wanted to continue work on a Smallville animated series.

In an Instagram Live Q&A, Rosenbaum replied that he and Welling are trying to get things going in response to a participant’s question of whether Smallville would return as an animated series:

Both Rosenbaum and Welling have had an animated Smallville series on their minds for a while. In 2018, they appeared at AwesomeCon in Washington, D.C., where they were asked about a potential revival. Welling said that “animated could be fun” and Rosenbaum joked that they should definitely do an animated series so he wouldn’t have to shave his head anymore.

Rosenbaum also mentioned that he had actually pitched the animated series idea to Smallville co-creator Alfred Gough.

“I swear to God, I brought that up to Al, the creator of Smallville, I said, “We should do an animated Smallville.” Can you imagine? That’d be huge! Smallville: The Animated Series, with all the real voices, and all the guest stars bring ’em in, it’d just be cool.”

An animated series would also be much easier given that all the original cast are spread out, not to mention that the filming equipment and resources would be more costly to film live. It’s unclear which of the original cast would come back though: Justin Hartley is currently on This Is Us and Allison Mack…well, she was part of a sex cult and should not be involved.

How Likely Is It That A Smallville Animated Series Will Happen?

The Smallville story did get a brief continuation as the digital comic book Smallville Season Eleven, which debuted in 2012. Set after the events of the TV series, the comic featured Clark fighting crime as Superman. In 2019, Tom Welling returned as Smallville’s Clark Tent for the Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths along with Erica Durance (Lois Lane). Rosenbaum was offered the chance to come back as Lex Luthor as well but turned it down because he wasn’t allowed to read the script beforehand.

Given the success of the Harley Quinn animated series, it would seem that another comics animated series should be right around the corner. Fingers crossed that this will happen! Do you want a Smallville animated series? Let us know in the comments below!
