Michael Keaton Is Uncertain About Playing Batman Again In The Flash Movie

Ever since Michael Keaton  (the Best Batman in the history of Batman on film) played Batman, I’ve wanted him to do it again. Sure, I’ve enjoyed…ish some Batmen since then. However, nothing really hits the spot (for me) like the Tim Burton’s Batman with Keaton in the cowl. Well, about that. Michael Keaton is talking playing Batman again. But maybe not in a good way.

Actor Gave Recent Interview to Talk about SAG Award Nomination

Michael Keaton recently sat for an interview with Deadline‘s Mike Fleming, Jr. The point of the interview was the film The Trial of the Chicago 7, in which Keaton plays former United States Attorney General Ramsey Clark. (Who, by the way, is still alive. Wow.) Keaton and the rest of the cast are nominees for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast. (The SAG Awards are Sunday, April 4, incidentally.)

Over the course of the interview, though, Fleming speaks to Keaton about a number of different topics, including his other works. We learn, for instance, that Keaton once participated in a reading of A Few Good Men. What role did he read? Oh, just Colonel Nathan R. Jessep, the role that Jack Nicholson played. Hey, what other roles has Jack Nicholson played?

That’s right, he was the Joker. Naturally then, you talk about the goshdarn Batman.

So IS Michael Keaton Playing Batman Again?

Last year, as we told you, Michael Keaton was in talks to play Batman again in the DCEU Flash movie. Well, unfortunately, it seems from his interview with Deadline that those talks haven’t led to a solid answer. In addition, Keaton also seemed reticent to give a solid answer in the interview.

Specifically, he said, “…to tell you the truth, somewhere on my iPad is an iteration of the whole Flash thing that I haven’t had time yet…I called them and said, I have to be honest with you. I can’t look at anything right now. I’m so deep into this thing I’m doing. Also, I’m prepping a thing I’m producing and getting ready to do down the road in the fall that I’ll be in, and I feel responsible to that. So, yeah, there is that. I’m not being cute or coy. If I talked about it, I’ll be just bullshitting you. I don’t really know. I have to look at the last draft.”

Besides being busy with other projects, Keaton also expressed his uneasiness with working more, especially in the middle of a global pancake. To that end, he told Deadline, “I keep my eye more on the Covid situation in the UK than anything. That will determine everything, and so that’s why I’m living outside the city here on 17 acres, staying away from everybody, because the Covid thing has got me really concerned. So, that’s my first thing about all projects. I look at it and go, is this thing going to kill me, literally? And you know, if it doesn’t, then we talk.”

So, to answer the question (Is Michael Keaton playing Batman again?), I would sadly have to say: not at the moment. However, it’s not as dire as it may seem. Things could change at any minute. Further, they haven’t even started filming yet–that’s still over a month out at press time. So it’s a little too early (for my taste) to start the freaking out. Finally, and this is just an observation here, but he sure says he’s telling the truth a lot in that answer. Who you tryin’ to convince, Mr. Keaton? It is common, especially for these big superhero deals, for actors to openly lie about their involvement because of NDAs and preserving the surprise.

Keaton is currently working on the Hulu opioid epidemic miniseries Dopesick, which he is also executive producing. It is expected to be streaming later this year.

**I know “Face to Face” by Siouxsie and the Banshees is what’s actually playing in this scene–don’t come for me. But the Garbage song is what’s playing in my heart.
