HBO Max To Debut the Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League, After #ReleaseTheSnyderCut Campaign

As has been teased for months now, HBO Max will finally debut the Zack Snyder cut of his film Justice League. In the run-up to the release of the first-ever big screen gathering of the JLA, the visionary director was forced to step away from the project. There were rumors of panicked executives pushing him out because of negative buzz around their shared cinematic universe. Unfortunately, he also suffered a devastating death in his family, so the decision to step away could have been his own. Either the movie delivered by Joss Whedon differed substantially from the film Snyder originally envisioned. Since then, a fan campaign overtook social media for Warner Bros. to allow him to finish his film.

The movement reached its peak during the 2019 Comic Con, when they purchased billboards demanding WB #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. Via the social media platform Vero, Snyder kept fans interested in it by sharing storyboards, production stills, and other things hinting at the differences in the films. Eventually, Gal Gadot and other members of the cast boosted the signal, calling for Warner Bros. to release the completed film.

Since then, a number of Twitter users known for leaking secrets from these studios said discussions were underway to make the film a reality.

How Zack Snyder Announced His Cut of Justice League Would Debut On HBO Max

The video above is clip from a live-streamed rewatch and fan Q&A for Man of Steel. Henry Cavill, Snyder, and ten others watched the film and brought up the fabled Snyder Cut near the end.

“Like I told you,” Snyder said, “I have it. So, it’s just a question of…we gotta find a way to show it. Someday.” His friends encouraged him to just release it on his own, which he said he couldn’t do. Then, he made a show of spinning the camera around to the HBO Max announcement image. The group broke out in cheers and, for some, tears.

Ironically, Henry Cavill was agnostic about the Snyder Cut, saying at first he didn’t care if came out or not. Yet, he was the only Justice League actor present for the announcement. One can only wonder the scene Jason Momoa might have made had he been invited.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League won’t premiere on HBO Max until 2021. Snyder said they still had some work to do on it. This is like visual effects shots, because I doubt Warner Bros. would spring for reshoots.

Some of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement were brash, abrasive, and (in some cases) abusive to those who disagreed with them. It is unfortunate if this is seen as a “reward” for that sort of toxic behavior. However, since so many of the artists involved wanted this version to be seen, it’s a good decision. Snyder especially lost his daughter and the biggest movie of his career in the same week. Also, from what we know about his version, it will be a story worth seeing.
