HBO Max Drops Doom Patrol Season 2 Trailer Full Of Mayhem, Magic, and Morons
The first season of Doom Patrol on DC Universe became the biggest critical hit for the newly-formed streaming service. Yet, at Comic-Con last year, DC announced that HBO Max would be sharing the financial burden of producing the next season, airing the episodes simultaneously with DC Universe. With the release date fast approaching, HBO Max dropped a trailer for Doom Patrol season 2 that doesn’t reveal much but captures the manic energy of the series. The biggest reveal is that we get our first look at Dorothy, a character from the comics whose unique visage comes with even more unique powers. She can bring fictional or fantasy characters to life, often to do some damage to whomever she’s facing off against. Timothy Dalton’s Niles Caulder is her father, and much of the revelations in the trailer show that he’s scared to death of his little girl.
Other than dealing with Dorothy, we don’t get much of a sense of the larger arc of the season. In Doom Patrol season 1, Alan Tudyk’s Mr. Nobody was the main antagonist. And while I’d bet a day’s pay he’ll be back, we don’t see him in this trailer. Rather, we get the sense that the story is about the team coming to grips with the revelations last season. They have reconciled that they are a family of misfits, and now it seems that they are on their way to becoming superheroes.
Despite appearing in a first season episode of Titans, this Doom Patrol team exists on its own Earth in the multiverse. (Earth-21, to be exact.) Jovian Wade’s Cyborg mentioned the Justice League, name-dropping the Flash specifically. So, while these heroes exist in this world, we’re not likely to see them.
What the Doom Patrol Season 2 Trailer Reveals About What Lies Ahead
(Beware, light spoilers for the first season to follow)
When we last left the Doomies/Doomers, they defeated Mr. Nobody and his allies, a giant militant rat and a giant evangelical cockroach. However, they had shrunk down to a very small size. In fact, we see Robotman, voiced by Brendan Fraser (and acted by Riley Shanahan) punching Admiral Whiskers in the hallways of Doom Manor. They also appear to take a ride on Robotman’s model race car track. Yet, they get embiggened to normal size, and the team gets to work at being, well, a team. The revelation that everything bad that’s happened to them happened because of Caulder is one that will resonate throughout the season.
However, since Dorothy, played by Abigail Shapiro, is also a “victim” of Niles’ machinations the gang will likely try to balance keeping her safe and keeping everyone safe from her. There are also glimpses of April Bowlby’s Rita Farr learning how to better use her powers, meaning we might actually see her become “Elasti-Girl” this year. In the first season, she could barely control her abilities. In the first episode she loses control while on a field trip and devastates the small town where they live.
The biggest clue that we’ll see Mr. Nobody again is the few scenes we see where Cyborg, Matt Bomer’s Negative Man, and Diane Guerrero’s Crazy Jane are back in “the white space.” This inter-dimensional area is, literally, the white space between the panels of a comic book.
What’s clear is that same manic energy that made the first season of Doom Patrol a hit is at play in the season 2 trailer. You can catch up on season 1 right now on DC Universe or HBO Max, and the first three episodes of the next season drops on June 25.
