The First Standalone Novel From V.E. Schwab
V.E. Schwab is the bestselling author of The Shades of Magic series, that has featured heavily in some of our recent top 10 lists. She is also the author of the superhero-esque duology Vicious and Vengeful that are available now. An eloquent writer who is a master of action and strange magics, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is her first standalone fantasy novel.
Schwab revealed on her Twitter that this is one of her most personal books that she has written thus far. She also says that when a publisher asked her what the core of the story was, she wrote her answer down on a postcard so she would not forget that it is about “a defiant kind of joy.” Something we all will be in need of in days to come.
As Schwab tweeted:
“As an author, I don’t really have ‘favourites’ among my books. Each one is a time capsule of who I was when I was writing it. That said, ADDIE probably has more ‘me’ in it than anything else I’ve written. It’s the first book I’ve been afraid of sharing.”
The Official Synopsis For The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
Entertainment Weekly revealed the cover for the novel this week, along with an excerpt. The story focuses on a young woman who makes a deal with the devil: to live forever but also be forgotten by everyone she meets. Until one day she meets a young man who remembers her. An official synopsis from Tor describes the book.
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.
Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, an adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.
But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore, and he remembers her name.

Emily O'Donnell is a writer and photographer with roots in some of the earliest online fandoms. She cut her genre teeth on the Wizard of Oz books at the tender age of 6 years old, and was reading epic adult fantasy novels by the age of 10. Decades later, she still consumes genre fiction like there is no tomorrow. She is delighted to be living through the golden age of sci-fi and fantasy popularity. She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
