As the Skywalker saga comes to a close, a new era is rising in books and graphic novels. This week we got a reveal of new Star Wars characters who will feature in the upcoming High Republic publishing event. Due out in Autumn of 2020, the High Republic is a series of interconnected books and graphic novels. Set hundreds of years before A New Hope, these stories will explore ‘the Golden Age of the Jedi.’

New Characters In The High Republic

The High Republic takes place long before the Star Wars era that fans are familiar with. Therefore new characters are necessary to establish the world. It is unlikely that we will see any familiar faces from the films. Although there is always a possibility of Yoda popping up due to his extraordinary age. One thing we do know is that the High Republic will focus on the Jedi, and a catastrophic event that spurs the galaxy into action.

“Readers will see a very wide variety of Jedi in this era,” says Lucasfilm Publishing creative director Michael Siglain. “This is a hopeful, optimistic time, when the Jedi are good and noble, and we want to reflect that in their characters while still giving them enough depth and dimension so that their individual personalities and idiosyncrasies shine through. The Jedi Knights of the High Republic are both aspirational and inspirational. In short, they’re the good guys.”

Let’s take a look at some of the new characters that will feature in Star Wars: The High Republic as announced this week over at

The Jedi Masters of The High Republic

Loden Greatstorm

A Jedi Master of the Twi’lek race, Loden Greatstorm is ‘one of the best teachers in the Jedi Order.’ He looks at everything as a learning experience. Strength and wisdom define this character, along with a truly excellent name. He also has a good sense of humor, no dour Jedi Master to be found here.

Stellan Gios

A respected Jedi Master who is characterized by his optimism and strength in the Force. Stellan trained alongside Avar Kriss, who is still a Jedi Knight. Together they ‘are a powerhouse team of two noble heroes in action.’ A natural teacher, Stellan can be found at a Jedi Temple ‘on the distant planet of Caragon-Viner.’

Avar Kriss is a Jedi Knight who often works closely with Master Stellan Gios. She is ‘the brightest, most noble example of Jedi-hood.’ A compassionate idealist who is ‘always ready to sacrifice herself over others.’ Avar Kriss can always find the good in people or situations. She is excited about frontier life and ready to face its challenges. Avar is ‘an inspiration for those who work with her.’ Including, we assume, her friend Stellan.

Keeve Trennis

New to the knighthood is Keeve Trennis, an impulsive and ‘quick-witted’ firebrand of a Jedi. She will work with Avar Kriss to handle The Great Catastrophe on Starlight Beacon. Plagued with doubts and low self-confidence, Keeve must learn to ‘trust in herself as much as she trusts in the Force.’

Vernestra “Vern” Rwoh

Trained by Master Stellan Gios, Vernestra Rwoh is a young Jedi Knight who has just been anointed. Hard-working and devoted to the Jedi, ‘at age sixteen she is one of the youngest Knights in a generation.’ Vern Rwoh will struggle to find her place amongst the Jedi, and lead by example. Vern will appear in Claudia Gray’s YA novel Into The Dark.

“When a transport ship is abruptly kicked out of hyperspace as part of a galaxy-wide disaster, newly-minted teen Jedi Vernestra Rwoh, a young Padawan, an audacious tech-kid, and the son of an ambassador are stranded on a jungle moon where they must work together to survive both the dangerous terrain and a hidden danger lurking in the shadows….”

What Other New Characters Will We Meet In The High Republic?

Alongside these renowned Jedi Knights and Masters are other characters yet to be revealed. We know from the official book descriptions that there will be a Wookie Jedi Knight appearing in Light of the Jedi. This Knight will team up with a female Jedi who uses the Force in a new musical way. There is also a Padawan named Reath Silas who will appear in A Test of Courage. Other padawans such as Farzaza and Luca will feature in The High Republic Adventures comic series. The first book in Star Wars: The High Republic is Light of the Jedi, due for publication in August 2020.

She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
