One of the joys of working for Comic Years is getting the chance to sit down and chat with genre authors in our Comic Years Podcast. It’s enlightening to hear about an author’s process, and where they draw inspiration from. Recently I talked to Linden Lewis, author of the acclaimed First Sister trilogy. And in our discussion, Linden Lewis gave me an exclusive reveal about the title of the final book in their trilogy.

The History Of The First Sister Trilogy

The First Sister was Lewis’s debut novel, although far from the first book she ever wrote. In our discussion, Lewis talks about her ideas for fantasy novels as well as a potential prequel for the First Sister trilogy. The second book in the trilogy The Second Rebel, just came out in August. In our discussion we discussed the main characters of the series. What fate does the future hold for them?

There is the titular First Sister, who is a member of a religious order that is bound to serve as comfort women to men on starships. Then there are Lito and Hiro, a pair of friends who were trained as warriors for the advanced Icarii civilization. Psychically connected via a neural implant, their story kicks off in the first book with Lito being tasked to kill Hiro – his former partner and best friend. Hiro has been accused of treason, but as Lito digs deeper he discovers that the glorious culture of the Icarii is full of corruption and cruelty.

Revolution Is Brewing

Much of this cruelty is aimed toward the Asters, a race of beings who have been genetically augmented to fare better in space. However, they have also been the subject of horrific experiments by the Icarii. Revolution is brewing within the Aster community in The Second Rebel, and Lito’s sister Luce also gets swept up into the conflict. In this book Lewis also goes deeper into the history of the Synthetics in the world of The First Sister. And it ends with several heartbreaking moments that set up the larger conflict and potential war in the final act.

An Exclusive Title Reveal

In our podcast interview, Lewis revealed to me what the title of the final book in their trilogy would be. It follows the naming tradition of The First Sister, and The Second Rebel. Lewis says that the title of the third book will be The Last Hero. An interesting title, considering that one of the main characters is named Hiro. I asked Lewis how the word Hero would be spelled in the title. Would it directly reference the character who set all of these events into motion? Lewis demurred, simply saying that the word would be spelled Hero and not the name Hiro. After all, there are many characters in these books who could play the role of the hero.

The First Sister trilogy by Linden Lewis is an epic queer space opera full of complex politics and truly compelling characters. We look forward to learning who will be The Last Hero in the final book of the trilogy. And we deeply hope that Lewis’s plans for a prequel  book about the Synthetics, as well as their ideas for some truly inspired epic fantasy come to life in the near future.

She is unashamed of the amount of fanfiction that still lingers online under her name.
