The final book of The Expanse has a title – Leviathan Falls – as announced by authors S.A. Corey this week. The novel will be the 9th in the long-running series. The title hearkens back to the first in the series – Leviathan Wakes – which came out in 2011. It has been six years since the release of the penultimate book in the series – Tiamat’s Wrath. The authors announced the title and revealed the book cover during a livestream yesterday with Orbit Books.

A Definitive End To The Expanse Series

No synopsis for Leviathan Falls has been released yet, but the authors promise a ‘definitive end’ to the series. Despite this ending, the authors do have one more novella in the works that will be set in the universe of The Expanse. A collection of the various short stories and novellas will also be coming at some point in the future. Unfortunately the collection will not feature the short story that was written exclusively for The Expanse tabletop RPG game.

The authors also revealed that they have a new project in the works. They are working on a new trilogy of books that will be very different from The Expanse. The only hint that they would give about this new project is that it draws influence from Frank Herbert, the author of Dune.

The Expanse takes place in the far future where humanity has colonized space. It focuses on several factions, the Earthers, the Belters (who live in the asteroid belt), and the Martians (humans who live on Mars, not little green aliens). The series primarily follows the ragtag crew of the spaceship The Rocinante as they discover a deadly extraterrestrial lifeform who wreaks havoc on any human or planet it encounters.

The Long Journey Of The Expanse Sets An Endpoint

With the final title due for release in 2021, The Expanse will mark a full decade of publication with Leviathan Falls. And what a decade it has been. The adaptation of the series on Syfy gained critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase. Then it unceremoniously cancelled, and picked up again by Amazon Prime after a successful fan petition.

Knowing that the final book in The Expanse is on the way might come as a relief for fans who are weary of long-running genre shows that outpace the books. The ninth book should set an endpoint for The Expanse show on Amazon, although the authors did say they would be open to creating more television in the same universe. One thing they will not do however is write any prequels. However for anyone looking for new content in The Expanse universe, there are graphic novels coming out to bridge the gaps between seasons 4 and 5 of the show. No word yet on when the next season of the hit show will stream on Amazon, but hopefully it will be coming early next year.

Leviathan Falls is due for release in 2021. For more genre news and updates be sure to follow Comic Years on Facebook and Twitter today.
