One of Netflix’s first-ever anime is getting a season 2. A new event kicked off the announcement for the Ultraman anime season 2 release, being sometime in Spring 2022. Ultraman was one of the first-ever anime adaptations that Netflix decided to take on. The show was a soft reboot of the classic Ultraman franchise, with a new CGI animation style. It was a really good entry into Netflix’s anime catalogue in those early days of 2019. It seems the streamer has been chugging out strong anime content since then at regular intervals. There was also an Ultraman and Ghost In The Shell cross-over announced early last year. With season 2 now confirmed, it’s sure to excite fans of the Ultraman anime.

The Origins Of The Ultraman Franchise

Ultraman came from a Japanese manga series in 2011. However, the manga itself was a sequel to the original TV series from 1966. That show was in live-action and was set in the Tokusatsu style of production. Tokusatsu was a genre of live-action content that relied on heavy special effects. Although, the ‘special effects’ of those days included miniatures, model sets, actors in monster costumes, forced perspective style shooting and many other techniques. The most common type of tokusatsu were ones that featured kaiju monsters, like the classic Godzilla movies and the Super Sentai series which eventually would become the Power Rangers in North America.

With Ultraman being one of those classic franchises, a reboot or revival into the modern-day in a new style was bound to happen. So after the success of the Manga, the same story got adapted into an original Netflix anime series that debuted in 2019. The anime was quite successful, as everyone praised the new legacy style story and animation. During the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Netflix confirmed the Ultraman anime season 2. And now, at a season 2 kick-off even, they also released the timing of the season 2 release as Spring of 2022.

The Ultraman Anime On Netflix Had A Legacy Story

The Netflix anime focused its season 1 on a legacy story that harkened back to the original story. The original story saw a man become Ultraman, a giant superhero to protect the world against monsters and other alien threats. The Netflix anime focuses on his son, who also inherited his powers. It’s the typical teenager who reluctantly becomes a superhero trope, but done with more nuance this time around. With the times changed, it’s harder to tell the bad guys apart from the good guys thes days, as our hero discovers during his adventures.

The story of the new Ultraman will continue in Ultraman anime season 2. Tweets from the event showcased a small teaser video, showing off some new Ultraman suits. Here’s Netflix’s official synopsis.

“Several years have passed since the events of Ultraman, with the legendary “Giant of Light” now a memory, as it is believed he returned home after fighting the many giant aliens that invaded the Earth. Shin Hayata’s son Shinjiro seems to possess a strange ability, and it is this ability, along with his father’s revelation that he was Ultraman, that leads Shinjiro to battle the new aliens invading the Earth as the new Ultraman.”

The Ultraman anime season 2 premieres on Netflix in Spring 2022.
