The movies made by Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki will finally become part of the mainstream outside of Japan. Miyazaki’s works from over the decades will be one of the first exhibitions at The Academy Museum, which is set to open on December 14, 2020.

What Is The Academy Museum?

The opening date of The Academy Museum was announced by Tom Hanks during the most recent 92nd Academy Awards ceremony. As he mentions in his speech, there are museums of all kinds to celebrate, educate and honor many different things. So why not a museum to celebrate the best of international cinema, from the Academy of Motion Picture and Arts? This museum will showcase, preserve, and honor the 90-plus year history of the Oscars for generations to come. And one of its opening exhibits will feature Hayao Miyazaki movies, as reported by THR.

Why Hayao Miyazaki Movies Are So Influential

Hayao Miyazaki movies feature stories created with care and attention. He has had this approach to filmmaking for decades. And Miyazaki always crafts stories that touch the soul. His animation style is painstakingly slow, sometimes productions taking years to complete. However, he is unique. Despite working in an industry where quick turnaround of product equals bigger commercial success, Miyazaki is the exception. Through the founding of Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki focused on emotionally-driven narratives with animation still drawn by hand. His fantastical worlds and stunning visual imagery set him apart from any animation filmmaker at the time, and to a certain extent, even today.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Movies Honoured at American Academy Makes Sense

Even beyond Japan, Hayao Miyazaki movies have earned their place worldwide. His 2001 film, Spirited Away gained international recognition, especially at the 75th Oscars in the Best Feature Animation category. While most recently Parasite made history as the first non-English language film to win Best Picture, Miyazaki’s Spirited Away did the same in the Animation category. Miyazaki’s influence can also get part of the credit for the large following and crossover appeal of Anime films from Japan, into the West, and worldwide.

Not The First Time Hayao Miyazaki Movies Will Be In a Museum

While it’s a big deal to have Hayao Miyazaki in The Academy Museum, it’s not an honor he’s unfamiliar with. The acclaimed filmmaker already has movies immortalized in the Studio Ghibli Museum in Japan. And this even includes works that are difficult to see anywhere else. With Hayao Miyazaki movies featured at the Academy Museum, the already world-renowned filmmaker will be available to many future generations to come. Especially given that Miyazaki is prone to announcing his retirement every decade or so. Despite that, his next directorial will be How Do You Live?, that should release sometime in the next year.

The Academy Museum opens on December 14, 2020.
