The Netflix original anime Transformers: War For Cybertron trilogy gets a new teaser for its second installment. The teaser came hot off of the announcements for the franchise during Harsbo’s Pulse Con event. The new anime trilogy goes back to tell the origin story of the Transformers in a unique and interesting way. And the new Transformers: War For Cybertron: Earthrise teaser takes things in a totally different direction, to the shock of many, including myself.

How This New Trilogy Is Putting A Spin On The Transformers Origin

The Transformers franchise is one from the ’80s that went through many iterations and adaptations from animated shows and movies, to comic books, to live-action movies. The story varies between the versions but is always similar. Leaving their home as part of a war, the heroic Autobots arrive on Earth, followed by the villainous Decepticons. Their war spills over as humans aid the Autobots in their war. The latest anime incarnation is a Netflix original that does something incredibly different. As part of a planned trilogy, the first part Siege, introduced us to the major players of the opposing Autobot and Decepticon factions. It also showed their home planet, Cybertron, in ruins over an apparent civil war between these two factions.

In an attempt to stop the villainous Megatron from getting an object of unlimited power, The Allspark, the leader of the Autobots seemingly sacrifices himself at the end of Siege. The cliffhanger of the last part basically implied that the Transformers will be going to Earth. That’s something that really excited me about where this new series was headed, and how it was getting there. But it looks like it’ll be a while before our beloved characters show up on Earth, as the Transformers: War For Cybertron: Earthrise teaser makes abundantly clear.

The Earthrise teaser shows the Decepticons lamenting their situation, while the Autobots are in a totally different predicament altogether. The official synopsis for Transformers: War For Cybertron: Earthrise from Netflix describes the current status quo between the two factions.

“With the Allspark gone, Megatron is forced to confront the harsh reality that his Decepticons are trapped on a dying Cybertron. Meanwhile, lost in the darkest reaches of space, Optimus Prime and his team embark on a desperate mission, unexpectedly running into … the spacefaring Mercenaries.”

It’s during this journey that the Autobots apparently find a third faction known as the Mercenaries. Usually, the Transformers mythos only features Autobots and Decepticons. Although, I did enquire in my season 1 review if there’s more than that. Bumblebee in this new series originally wasn’t part of any faction, but then chose to become an Autobot. Similarly, it seems there’s another faction of Transformers not affiliated with the original two, deep in space. Who they are or what their motives are will be something to watch out for in Earthrise. But it definitely looks like Earth is a ways off in this new anime trilogy, with possibly the third part dealing with that part of the adventure? Stay tuned to this space for more as it breaks.

Transformers: War for Cybertron: Siege is currently streaming on Netflix. Earthrise is coming soon.
