In a world of reboots, remakes, and sequels, it makes sense that creators would “update” classic anime. With many franchises getting sequels like Inuyasha, others are getting reboots for a new generation. The Shaman King anime remake falls into the latter category, with a brand new series coming soon. With a new trailer released, the remake looks like a worthy upgrade to the original anime series.

Best Selling Manga Had A Simple But Interesting Story

Based on a best selling manga, Shaman King is all about a young boy who wants to be the king of all other shaman. The manga from Hiroyuki Takei came out in from 1998 and the original run lasted until 2004. Since then there have been multiple sequels and continuations that still ongoing today. With over 35 million copies sold worldwide, Shaman King is one of the best selling manga series of all time. So naturally, a Shaman King anime adaptation came out in 2001 and found an audience as passionate as those who love the manga.

In the Shaman King anime, a shaman is a medium who bridges between the living world and that of the dead. The story is all about a teen boy who wants to become the greatest shaman in the world. To do this, he must win a tournament that is only held every 500 years, facing off against the greatest shamans out there. The winner gets to connect with the Great Spirit and remake the world in their image. Unlimited power, essentially. So it’s obvious why the boy wants it so bad. Yet, as with any promise of ultimate power, there’s a lot more to it than just that.

A New Shaman King Anime Remake Is on Its Way That Upgrades the Animation

The first Shaman King anime series ran from 2001 to 2002, with only 64 episodes aired. Despite its short run, in comparison to other anime that is, Shaman King was still quite successful. With worldwide licenses, it ran on American television for years. It’s one of the more successful anime out there. So the Shaman King anime remake is something that fans old and new will be eager to see. And the new trailer does not disappoint.

While it’s just a teaser, it shows off the new series’ brand new anime style, and it’s definitely an upgrade. The Shaman King characters got their own redesign with more nuance such as their different eye colors, as well as more detail in their styling. Adding to that the visuals of the massive action sequences, the Shaman King anime remake looks like a definite visual improvement over its original. Visuals only go so far, and hopefully this remake retains all that which made the first series so special.

The Shaman King anime remake releases sometime in Japan in 2021. No word yet on its American debut.
